Massey Matters is all about the people of Massey, so if you want support or are wanting to lead change in your neighbourhood come and have a cuppa with us!
"Massey Matters" is an exciting new flagship sustainable development project being Supported by Auckland City Council
The broad aim of the project is for the council to work alongside the local community and other partners to develop a programme for long term, community driven, sustainable neighbourhood renewal and development in the Massey area. There are two key parts to the project:
building and strengthening community activity & networks and sense of local identity and pride
improving the way Massey looks and feels and functions - eg. public transport, walking and cycling connections, shops, social services and facilities, parks and recreation opportunities, the natural environment, more local jobs etc.
Some initial research by the council showed that there is strong support for a new 'Massey' project, with locals seeing the Project as an opportunity to:
develop a stronger Massey identity
increase community connectedness and positive vibes
have more Massey owned events and activities and more community owned spaces and places
take the best from the past and develop a new future for Massey
The size of the Massey area (approx 25,000 people) means that Massey Matters will be an umbrella for a range of smaller projects that will happen across the area. We hope that action will take place at many levels and places (eg. within neighbourhoods, schools, communities of interest, marae, etc) over the next ten years. A programme of action for 2007 has now been developed which includes a new community projects fund and a new neighbourhood project focused around West Harbour Primary School.
Council has signalled a significant commitment to Massey Matters!
