Neighbourhood Support Waitakere - working together to create safer, supportive communities
Neighbourhood Support Waitakere is overseen by a Committee, currently employing two staff - Sharon and Louise who are based at the Te Atatu Police Station. NSW work collaboratively with NZ Police, NZ Fire Service, Civil Defence and Auckland Council to continue to build household membership within the Waitakere area.
Your Neighbourhood Support Group provides an opportunity for neighbours to work together with each other, the Police and other community organisations to make a difference by enhancing community safety and well being.
NSW is not about endless meetings or setting up committees, it is a very informal casual set up. An initial meeting to get started is a good idea, followed by weekly communicated updates sent from the office and forwarded via your Street Contact.
Groups function by mutual effort, trust and cooperation between neighbours by sharing information, ideas and insights. By joining your local group you are saying "I am interested in my neighbourhood and the safety and wellbeing of everyone who lives in it".
For groups to be successful, communication in the form of sharing information is most important. That information may come from within the group or from the Police via the Street Contact. whose role it is to keep groups informed of what is happening in or near their neighbourhood. Better awareness means better security.
Members of Groups should:
Respond to and report suspicious behaviour to the Police first and also to each other.
Employ sensible security habits.
Look out for each other.
Be prepared for civil emergencies, whether it be flood, pandemic, earthquake or other event that causes problems in the community.
There is no cost involved. NSW will provide ongoing support and advice for any issues you may encounter. We will also provide you with a weekly email to update your group.
Some neighbours already know each other well and do look out for one another. Forming a group will then only be a matter of contacting Neighbourhood Support Waitakere who will formalise what already exists.
