It was a nice place to stay. Breakfast was good. Room was clean. Would come back again
Disappointed.nnRiversleigh is such a lovely and inviting building, which drew my wife and I to stay there. The building is wonderful and our room was nice. That’s where the good ends though.nnThis is a boutique hotel charging boutique hotel prices but without the customer service. The place was almost devoid of staff. The only time I saw anyone was at breakfast and the cleaners. Reception was vacant. The bar was always closed. I couldn’t even get in the front door because it was locked. I had to walk around to the back. The lack of staff presence manifested badly during our stay.nnOn our first night there, at an ungodly hour, there was a fire alarm. There was no-one on site to take charge of the situation or direct us. We had to figure that out ourselves. On our last night there was a lot of noise from some of the guests, including a group being noisy close to midnight. Again, there was no-one on site for me to speak to, to have them shut up. I found the reception phone number, called it, and was told by a recorded message I had to call another number, which I could not memorize, hence I had to call the main number again, this time armed with a pen. Upon calling the other number I was put on hold for about 10 minutes, waiting to speak to someone. After managing to speak to someone they said they would send someone there to fix things. 10 minutes later the noise continued. Sure it may have only been 10 minutes, but it was close to midnight and my wife and I were trying to sleep. Like the fire alarm incident in which it took ages for someone in authority to turn up, we had to resolve the matter ourselves, ie I had to tell them to shut up myself. I should not have had to do this. If there was someone on site at all times this would not have happened.nnIt was bizarre. It was like the staff had fled and left us to fend for ourselves. They would not service our room the entire week we were there; just offer an exchange of towels instead. They were happy to take our money but not provide the service expected for a boutique hotel. I saw corners being cut instead. I do not accept Covid as an excuse. They need to have a continual on site presence for such basic things as guest safety and emergency response management, even if that presence is reduced.nnThe advertising for the room said complimentary breakfast. That’s a nice anchor. Upon checking in though you discover it is only a continental breakfast. The breakfast was adequate, but again, there were signs of management doing things on the cheap over and above providing a high quality boutique hotel level of service. There was coffee, but you had better like the instant variety, because there was no freshly brewed coffee to be had. Little things like that count, and given what we paid, it’s something to expect.nnMy advice is, until they lift their game with service levels, stay elsewhere. Do not be wooed by the nice historic building. It’s not worth it. There are plenty of other options in Bairnsdale.nnPostscript: After our very ordinary stay, I wrote to the hotel, telling them of our disappointing experience. No-one bothered to reply.
Beautiful Victorian buildings. Quiet location. Modernised rooms but still retaining history. Clean and comfortable. Easy after hours access with a PIN. Easy, on site parking. Pleasant continental breakfast. Highly recommended.
