Sydney Opera House

Story

The Bennelong Apartments is a residential apartment building and multi-use complex on the east side of Sydney's Circular Quay. The buildings were designed by Andrew Andersons and PTW Architects, and completed in 1998.The Bennelong Apartments consist of three buildings. No. 1 Macquarie Street is the northernmost building in the development. It is connected via a bridge at its southern end to the No. 3-7 Macquarie Street building, which houses a cinema, restaurants and shops, as well as apartments. The southernmost building, No. 61 Macquarie Street, contains the Pullman Quay Grand Hotel and apartments. The nickname "the Toaster" derives from the resemblance of No. 1 Macquarie Street to the kitchen appliance, but the term is also applied to the whole complex. In November 2007, an apartment in the building sold for $8.4 million. With an internal area of 190 square metres, the price of $44,210 per square metre was an Australian record. In July 2015, a Level 11 penthouse in the Bennelong Apartments sold for approximately $22 million, which at the time was the second most expensive apartment sale in the history of Sydney and Australia.Site historyThe Bennelong Apartments sit on the eastern side of Sydney Cove or Circular Quay. This was the site of the first landing by Europeans in Sydney, on 26 January 1788. The governor's temporary canvas house was erected on the east side of the cove. Unlike the southern and western sides of Sydney Cove, the eastern side of the cove remained largely uninhabited in the early years of the colony; one notable inhabitant was Bennelong, after whom the adjacent Bennelong Point and Bennelong Apartments are named. In the early 19th century, the entire area was part of the Governor's Domain, though some commercial activity developed along the shoreline.

Excellent experience! This is a must visit place if you are in Sydney. The views are breathtaking. The tour was very nice. The history is explained in the tour and also if you are lucky then you can see various theatres/halls inside. At night we saw a light show which was about 10-20 minutes and was a wonderful experience. There are a lot of restaurants next to opera house which give you excellent views to enjoy over dinner. Highly recommended!

Fantastic building and amazing tour! The Opera House walking tour was outstanding. We were able to see the Playhouse theater, the Drama theater as well as both Opera theaters. The Tour Guide provided extensive background information on the design and building of the Sydney Opera House. The roof design is amazing! In addition, the Opera Bar has the best fish & chips in Sydney as well as wide selection of ICE COLD BEER! Definitely worth the price!

Fantastic. Once in a lifetime experience you can see easily and frequently. Evokes a special set of emotions for my partner and I when visiting. We love it and will return again. Staff in the bar were exceptionally friendly and went over and above for us. Made our night. Great for a whisky rye on a special occasion

Amazing. If you get a chance in your life, you must visit and enjoy this place and you will never disappointed. Great civil work and hats off those who were behind the design. There are lots of restaurants and food choices around the Opera House and good view in most of the restaurants. During the operation time, the bar and restaurants are fully packed and not recommended to go with kids to this crowd.

Awesome place though packed with tourists and fancy people during daylight hours (there is a restaurant/bar attached that gets lively for lunch and dinner). Even after dark there are plenty of people around and it's very hard to get a good picture of just you and/or the background. Go in the early morning for sunrise and you can get a great picture as long as there aren't too many joggers out. Or go for dinner and drinks to watch the sunset but don't be surprised if you've got a lot of company!
