An internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, Sovereign Hill brings to life the colour and excitement of Australia’s 1850s goldfields providing a full day’s entertainment with hands-on experiences for the whole family.

It’s just like stepping back in time to goldrush Ballarat– from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the Red Hill Gully Diggings where visitors pan for real gold and it’s ‘finders keepers’!

Visitors can see a $150,000 gold pour, ride in a horse-drawn carriage and watch street performers, including the Redcoat Soldiers who march and drill before firing their muskets. Along Main Street, there are shops selling 1850s-style goods, hotels and schools to visit, and a theatre with goldfields entertainment. For the adventurous, there are underground mine tours with an inclined tramway ride. And those with a special interest in 19th century trades can chat with our skilled craftsmen at work in the blacksmith’s forge, the candle works, the wheelwright’s plant, the coachbuilder’s and the confectionery factory.

By night, Sovereign Hill presents its spectacular, multi-million dollar sound-and-light show, ‘Blood on the Southern Cross’ – the legendary story of the 1854 Eureka Uprising (a great Australian drama). A two-course meal with drinks is also available on-site at Sovereign Hill prior to the show.

Accommodation is also available on-site at Sovereign Hill Hotel. With King Coil beds, free Wi-Fi and a guest bar and lounge, Sovereign Hill Hotel is a popular choice for any traveller. There is a variety of accommodation options ranging from our recently refurbished Governor’s rooms ideal for couples, superbly appointed Sovereign rooms for families and the corporate traveller and large, affordable family units.

Very nice and educational. Completely presented how people in old days live for gold mining. You can also experience finding your own gold! Really fun place and want to come back! Better go there when they open, too many things to see! Arrange your schedule well and you can see many things! And always check the weather before going. Even in summer, If it rains, take your jumper and umbrella is a strongly recommended.

Fantastic experience of 1850s gold rush life. So much to do - if you have time make sure to validate your ticket for a second (consecutive) day free. Lots of great souvenirs available which are made on site at the Tin Smiths, Forger, candle stick makers, the boiled sweet shop (try the raspberry drops), News printer, or more. If you want to dress up in the fashion of the day and get a black & white or sepia photo make sure to visit the photographer early in the day to book. (Their clothes adjust to many sizes and slip over your own clothes). There is a modern cafe and eating area off to the side, but I recommend getting a pie, pasty or sausage roll at the bakery. Toilets are numerous and dotted about the site. Panning for gold is likely to yield a few specs of gold, which you can keep (little glass jars are available for about a dollar nearby). Recommended for families, but you may want to go over two days if your little ones tire easily.

The village was absolutely lovely! Felt very real, as if I was really back in the 1850s. All the actors and actresses were also very polite and dedicated to their role - it was very adorable to be greeted with a tip of a hat. They were also very funny. The gold pour demonstration was also interesting, and we also watched another demonstration of a musket gun firing. Although aside from these olden sights, there isn't that much to do in this village. The ticket price is slightly high, about 60AUD for adults and you still have to top up for the gold mine tour which we did not go on. But the atmosphere created by the physical environment as well as the dedication and effort of all the actors and actresses was amazing and made up for the lack of things to do. We also watched the Blood of the Southern Cross, and although the timing of all the light and sound is impressive, the show itself was not that captivating. Most of it was just narration accompanied by effects. An interesting re-enactment of historical events, but for those not interested in history, it might be a bit of a bore.

This is a fantastic experience for all ages. The staff are so friendly and people oriented that it makes the whole park so much better and more involving. There are many activities from free to paid but every one is worth the time and money. I can never visit sovereign hill enough. Perfect.
