The old buildings are amazing and the volunteers who were explaining what we were seeing through the very old telescope were enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. I recommend going to one of their events but bring the insect repellant to ward off the mosquitoes
Enthusiastic and interesting leader who showed us about the observatory, films filled the time for the clouds to pass with finally viewing the rings of Saturn. And the Jewel box & alpha centory. Great cold night very informative, thank you.
The observatory is situated at the Magpie Road, which is not a long walk from the Sovereign Hill. There were reflective and refractive telescopes in the observatory. When I arrived the observatory, there was an old lady which welcomed me and showed me around the observatory. She introduced the telescopes in the observatory, the history of the observatory, and the activities that will be held to me. It was not a large observatory, but its colourful windows were quite beautiful. I enjoyed the visit at the observatory a lot.
Worth the visit if you are interested in the Stars. Early built observatory. Interesting history.
Unfortunately it was too overcast to use the telescope. Had to watch movies about science subjects, would have been alot better if we at least got to see a movie about the stars or planets etc. We came to visit Ballarat to see the observatory. Disappointed.
I had the best time here tonight. Have lived in Ballarat all my life and its taken me this long to come but so glad I did. Our guide went above and beyond to ensure that we got to see all 5 planets out at the moment before the clouds came over even going to the lengths of trimming a near by bush that was partially blocking our vision. She was very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions! I feel so lucky to live so close by and will be back! Thankyou
On a clear night you can view nebula, star clusters, planets including Saturn with its rings and Jupiter with its moons, also very sharp and detailed view of the moon with craters etc. Awesome experience enjoying the beauty of creation.
Such a great place and a hidden gem for Ballarat, do yourselves a favour and pay visit. There is something for everyone, from astromoners, history buffs, fans of the stunning historical stained glass or those simply wanting so soak up the amazing, calm atmosphere of this 130 year old icon.
Very disappointed in Ballarat Observatory organization of events. Even more disappointed with their managements response to the review a good percentage of it misleading information. A sorry affair indeed! I have booked for events on two occasions both with a unsatisfactory outcome. First event, 2020 was advertised on the website for the day after the event, I got a phone call asking me if I was attending the session 24 hours prior to the advertised date and time! Thought I’d try again 2021 with the new COVID normal this year only to get an email saying Ballarat Observatory had provided the wrong information to Trybooking and I would need to pay another $15 to attend the event I had chosen. Emails back and forward then a phone call where I canceled my booking having lost faith in the administration of this organization and received a refund for both events. Apparently I have helped to sort out the mistakes for everyone else, your welcome but I’m not impressed. Check the details with this group or miss out.
This is another interesting historical place in ballarat you should stop by and have a look it yourself. If you have a plan to visit Sovereign Hill, spare another 45 minutes for this place. It's not far away from gold museum. Make sure you you come in when Ballarat is not cloudy because you could see a beautiful milky way. Plan to come in the evening.
