The first time I arrived at the hostel I did not know English, I did not have a job and I did not have a car to go to work. As soon as Michael arrived the owner he gave me everything I missed. In addition to this every day I saw people who did not clean anything and the next morning the owner's wife went to clean all that they had left the others. I don't know what kind of people made the others reviews, but if they are prince could go in hotel 5 stars and spend more money. I feel to say only thanks for everything
Beware: do NOT stay here longer than 1 night. You can convince the owner to let you pay for only one night for us, 3 people, cost $30 each. Do not get trapped in to their weekly scheme. Head to Shep immediately if possible. Absolutley everything is filthy, even for a backpackers.. this place takes the cake for worst I've seen. The shower is a glorified cubicle reminiscent of a cesspool with a rusty chair and no where to hang your clothes or put your stuff to stay dry. The rooms haven't been cleaned in months, and there are fridges in the two rooms we saw that each had rotting food in them. The kitchen was disastrous with more flies than I have seen yet in Australia and a mountain of garbage next to the tower of dirty dishes. The family mother, father, and a sketchy son who run this hostel do not come across as good people, as they only seemed 'nice' when we seemed like promising candidates for them to keep under their lock and key. They immediately turned nasty when we asked to only stay the night and kept badgering us to pay for a week until we grabbed our stuff and were literally about to set up camp in the field across the way. Please heed our warning and head immediately to Shepparton if you're looking for work.
>>> WARNING! DO NOT STOP AT THIS HOSTEL <<< Hi everyone! This hotel is pathetic! Yes the cleaning is done if you only check the bins because they are emptied everyday. For the rest, during my stay, the floor in the bathroom for example was not cleaned once. The room has probably never been cleaned since the opening of this place. The trash in the kitchen, how horrible! The smell was awful, worse than a rotting corpse! You're not allowed to drink and talk outside in the evening, even far from the bedrooms and not loud, the owner is there EVERY NIGHT to tell us to stop. About work, yes you will find work, but DO NOT expect it will count for the second visa! Oh and the owner prefers Asians, he doesn't really like the Europeans. And did i tell you how much his wife was happy and smiling? But i can understand, it's a dream to live there! Otherwise, there's one good point about it! People who live there with you are really friendly! You can play cards all your free time, because there's nothing else to do, and laugh about how bad the hostel is! How funny it is!? Enjoy!
I stayed here some 5 years ago. I’m just on another vacation in Australia and was thinking of this place and thought “let’s see what people have to say about this place nowadays”. I can pretty much confirm all the 1-star ratings and when I saw that good old Smartphone-Sam gave himself a 5 star rating probably in order to lift the average, I decided to leave this 1-star rating to correct that a bit and to truthfully document that I did indeed have the same horrible experience like so many apparently did after me and up to this day. A wonder that no health department or other government institution hasn’t shut them down in the meantime... just avoid this place.
Backpackers do not come here!!! This place is by far the dirtiest place I have stayed in austrailia and many will say it depends on the backpackers staying there but it really doesn't. Black mould comes from long term uncleanliness and the damp walls. I and others agreed we felt run down and ill staying here coincedence? You can only pay cash and there are no official receipts every time you pay rent. Michael will find you work of course and will charge you $6 per person every day on minibus fare but the work will very quickly come to an end. It doesn't help that the seeka farm which most of the jobs are really dislike Michael and would like to cut ties as they told us at work. The wife of the owner never makes any effort to smile or speak to anyone if anything she plays a big part in the dodgy ways of the hostel. Backpackers will be blamed for drinking and smoking etc however who supplies the smoking ? The family. They will also threaten to call the police all the time which is silly as the family itself could get in a lot of trouble should they get caught for what they do. If you come here with no money this will be an advantage to the family as you are now stuck!! They will also call your farm boss the jobs you start is nothing to do with the hostel so you aren't employed under Michael if you leave this hostel they will phone your boss and lie to get you fired trust me this has happened to someone during my stay. This place needs to be investigated as soon as possible before more backpackers are in this situation. You even have to supply your own toilet paper!!! One washing machine works which cost $4 the tumble dryer hasn't worked for the whole time I stayed which was a lot over a month!! Insects everywhere, one fridge in every room even in 10 bed room just one!
Oh man where do I start.... Just joking I know exactly where to start. I arrived in the hostel in the end of December and stayed for about 5 weeks. HYGIENE The bathrooms and the kitchen were "cleaned" once a day. That means someone swiped the tables, dis the dishes others left behind and the rubish was emptied. The problem were the ovens. There were 3 stoves with ovens, but none of them worked. We had to use the little electric oven which I showed in the picture. In my time there I never saw anyone cleaning that thing. One evening I was in the kitchen and a guy turned it on because he wanted to make pizza, left the room for 2 minutes, I turned around and that thing was burning because of the generations of grease inside. Someone had to put it out with a fire extinguisher. At least we got a new oven the same night. But no, no proper oven for the 60 people staying there, only a little one again which also was not cleaned. The kitchen had another mayor problem. Black Mould. When you washed the dishes, you couldn't dry them because even if there were towels, they would be so filthy that you wouldn't even want to touch them. Because you had no towels you had to put the wet cutting boards on the windowsill, which was made out of wood that's what I think at least; it was covered with MOULD. Pictures included The bathroom floors were usually covered in a crusty layer of dust seen in pictures. While I was staying there a group of guys arrived and had a party smashes stuff and peed in the room next to mine. The guys were thrown out, of course. But the poor guy who was in that room with them, without bein part of the group got told he had to clean up the pee, it's not the hostels responsibility. The pee was on his favourite t-shirt too. The pots and pans in the kitchen were dangerous. Some handles were loose, some were fully gone. When I was cooking once one guy made some food. As it was done he took it of the stove and wanted to put it on the counter but with a loud crash the food was spread on the floor with the pot and the guy holding the handle. WORK I arrived on the last days of December I think and had my first das of work on the 4th January. I was really happy about it, but felt bad for others in the hostel that have been waiting for work for weeks and nothing happened. I worked for GV Independent packers. I worked for $16/h, I was told that this is what I'd left after tax and the 30% my contractor Michael took. The first time I meet Michael was on the first pay day. I asked him if we get payslips and he said yes. I was also assured it would count towards my second year. I left the hostel in the beginning of February. It's been 2 Month and I'm still running after my payslips. No one provides you with any information about the contractors. I only have his first name and phone number. I doubt he even has an ABN or he would have given me the payslips a long time ago. This hostel is the worst and most expensive accommodation in Shepparton. You are far better of finding a job for yourself. As I was there they took 130$/pw, I talked to a lot of people at my work and most of them were staying in share houses for 80-90/pw. I got told a lot of stuff gets stolen there. We usually have no keys and the rooms are always open. I also got told it might be an inside job. I liked my time in this hostel, but it was ONLY because of the guests staying there and absolutely not because of anything the hostel had to "offer".
The hostel itself is extremely basic, disgusting cleanliness and not enough bathrooms, but for 125 a week its pretty cheap. EDIT: i have just been called by sam from the hostel stating she was going to give my number to the police for leaving a bad review. Also to clear up we were not asked to leave at all, we left on our own accord. We were tricked in to coming to this place by an advert on gumtree guarenteeing work, only to be given two days of cherry picking and then told we would have to wait til a new job comes up. To elaborate further on my review, not one of the three ovens work, the kitchen is the worst i have seen in all my 5 months of travelling australia. You cannot drink at this hostel, we had a few beers in our own car, so no we were not getting drunk and throwing up. This place is abysmal and they will harras you just for leaving a bad review! Jokers.
I travelled a lot around the world and I've never seen any place so dirty. That is not acceptable for Australia. Moreover you can't use sleeping bag I don't understand why so you have to use disgusting covers without any sheet on it. Winter is really really cold, they don't heat. Run away from this place. And if you are going do the same than me: buy gloves and clean your place and des infect before using the kitchen! Never walk without shoes!
DO NOT COME HERE!!!! We found out about this place from an online advert guaranteeing fruit picking work. We had work and an apartment in Sydney but needed the second year visa so once we had a guarantee of work we gave notice on our jobs and apartment and left for Shepparton. I had been calling them every week or so to make sure there was still work and accomodation and the last call I made was the night before we set off. AFTER 10 HOURS OF DRIVING WE ARRIVED AND WE'RE TOLD THEY HAD NO WORK AND NO ACCOMODATION!!! THEY WOULDN'T EVEN LET US SLEEP THERE FOR THE NIGHT OR CHARGE OUR PHONES!!!! Before telling us this they took photocopies of our passports and made us fill forms out including vehicle reg, home adress etc. I can only assume that they do this kind of thing regularly and now take passports and details so people don't kick off. We were there for about 30/45 minutes arguing with them and in that time managed to talk to a couple of people staying there. They said "it's basically a slave Labour camp run by mobsters". In hindsight maybe we were the lucky ones never actually having to spend a night here! AVOID AVOID AVOID
ATTENTION ! THIS BACKPACKER HAS DEPLORABLE HYGIEN AND OWNERS ARE SCAMMERS ! We are 3 backpackers travelling around Australia from nearly 6 months. Two days ago, Sunday 26/01/14, we arrived in Shepparton, Victoria with the idea to start doing our farm work. The only backpack which answer at the phone was the Mooroopna Backpackers International. This hostel is located in Mooroopna, a very small town close to Shepparton. During the phone call, the owner’s son, Sabri told us that they have room for the three of us and also jobs. We took a taxi, get into the reception room and met Sabri. He said that we will be able to work the next morning but we should pay for one week first. We agreed and proposed to pay by card but he refused and offered to bring us to an ATM by car because he didn’t accept cards. In the way to get the cash he tried to reassure us saying that he got a four beds bedroom, only for us and a “French girl”. After we came back and paid him with our cash, he showed us our room: twelves beds, eight people living inside at this time. We were really avoided. Fearing a general incomprehension we asked him: “what is this room?” - He said: “Sorry guys, we only have these beds at this time, if we got have any vacancy, I will move you in a four bed bedroom.” Tired by the travel and the fear to not find a bed before night we stopped argue and began to settle down. The first minutes in the room were terrible. A stench hovering in the air, surely after the huge fridge enthroned in the middle of the room. They give us a couple of old sheets and covers really old. Idem for the mattress. So filthy that I used my beach towel as cover. Even the fork and knife which they gave us weren’t washed! Moreover, in their advertising the owners wrote “air conditioned”, but it was only operating in the hallway, not in the bedrooms, where there was not even a fan. In this season the average temperature at night is very hot in the rooms. I went also to check the bathrooms only 2 for about 60 people. The smell and the general state were comparable at our bedroom… worst in fact. Sadly, every room in this hostel was as dilapidated. We visited lots of backpackers hostel and this one is crappiest from far. I stop here the description, you will realize by yourself seeing the pictures behind annexes. I deliberately skip the episode concerning the workday get up at 5 am, picked cherries-tomatoes during 7 hours under 40°C to earn 30$ cash in the hand... It’s hard to believe but sadly true. In the mini-bus that we paid 6$ each, on our way back to the hostel, we decided that we needed to leave the next morning Tuesday. Once arrived, we speak with the owner at the reception and of course he said: “You paid for one week, it’s like a booking, I can’t give your money back”. The facts were that his son didn’t leave us the choice about taking only one night or a full week. Anyways he just used the same kind of scam with a Finland girl who just arrived today. We were feeling very rip off. This is why we required your help to prevent this misfortune to others travelers and backpackers. Thanks forward for your help.
