Best Mother’s Day with my daughter at Second Home. Tucked away in a leafy pocket of Eltham among the gum trees, the setting is so calm and beautiful. The heated courtyard made it extra cosy, and parking was easy. The prawn spaghetti was a standout… garlic, chilli, parsley and lemon with a really generous serve of prawns & pasta.nA relaxed, warm ambiance and a place we’ll definitely come back to.
Came in for brunch with the family, the experience was awesome!nnThe decor and the busy atmosphere gave a very homely and comfortable vibe. There were a lot of people, so make sure you make a reservation to avoid a long wait.nnAlthough we did have to wait quite a while for our food, there were a lot of things to do—the store sells lots of pottery, soap, jam and pastries, so it's a good time to wander around the large warehouse-esque space.nnWe had the steak, the wagyu burger, golden folded eggs and avocado toast, all of which were very delicious and cooked to perfection!nnThank you for a great time.
We've been several times. The food is always good. But a couple of service issues on our last visit. There was an empty large table near us. A staff member perhaps a manager? cleared used plates from several tables including ours, and put them all on the empty table, to then scrape & stack the plates and take them out in one go. I do get it. She was saving herself 5 trips to the kitchen with dirty plates. But, customers really don't want to see staff scraping & stacking plates beside their table! Then my friend & I both wanted to pay cash. We were informed they only had 5c coins remaining for change, so offered us to do a card payment with no surcharge. I asked for a receipt, which showed that I was charged a surcharge! Of course it was only 40c each but that's not the point. The server said she would refund our fees but we needed to wait while she took payment from the next 6 people in the queue!!! Perhaps a better float is needed so cash can be used.
Second Home: Where Industrial Design Meets Comfort DiningnnSome places draw you in quietly. Others invite you to linger. Second Home manages to do both.nnWas it the name or the location that lured my friend and I inside? Whatever the reason, we joined the short queue a promising sign and waited to be seated, taking in our surroundings as we went.nnFrom the outside, the brick facade and towering gum trees give little away. Step inside, however, and the space opens dramatically. It feels like a factory thoughtfully reborn—an expansive interior softened by white tablecloths, intimate round tables, generous communal seating, and a soaring ceiling supported by hefty timber beams that look as though they may once have lived another life entirely. Industrial lighting adds warmth rather than edge, striking a balance between style and comfort.nnAt the rear, a glass-lined courtyard blurs the boundary between indoors and out, allowing natural light to flood the room and creating an atmosphere that feels relaxed yet considered.nnService was just as impressive. We were looked after by Ash—calm, attentive and genuinely welcoming. Nothing felt rushed, despite the steady flow of diners.nnBreakfast was still being served, and the menu offered plenty to linger over. I chose poached eggs cooked exactly as I like them—almost boiled—served on buttered sourdough with double-smoked bacon and a pork and fennel sausage, alongside a generous mug of cappuccino. My friend opted for the Golden Folded Eggs: silky, creamy eggs with goat’s cheese and fresh herb pesto on five-grain sourdough, accompanied by thyme-buttered mushrooms and bacon. It was a beautifully balanced plate, rich without being heavy.nnA highlight was the ability to build your own breakfast, adding sides as you please—a small touch that makes the experience feel personal.nnThough the room was full, it never felt crowded. Conversations hummed softly, and each table seemed wrapped in its own moment. Thoughtful spacing and an easy atmosphere made it feel effortlessly comfortable.nnThe food was excellent, the service faultless, and the small details stood out—right down to being handed a glass of ice when I asked for ice-cold water.nnWould I return? Without hesitation.nWould I recommend it? Absolutely.nJust one piece of advice: book ahead. Places like this don’t stay secret for long.
Went to Second Home Cafe in Eltham for the first time today for our book club catch-up and wow… we tried so much food zero regrets and everything was incredible. The Vietnamese coffee?? Next level. I’m still thinking about it. nnThe service was absolutely impeccable - so warm and welcoming, it genuinely feels like you’re at a retreat/spa tucked away and enjoying the atmosphere and company.nnSafe to say I’ve found a new gem… and I’m 100% taking my partner there next
