Really great outdoor area. Sandpit for the kids with lots of toys. Food is also really great. However each time we go here they seem to be out of half the things on the menu (inc drink options). Plus they close the kitchen too early, in my opinion. It closes at 2:30pm and they are open until 4pm.

Was a favourite but our last two visits have been a bit dissapointing. The staff aren't as friendly or enthusiastic as they have been in the past. And the last two times we have tried to order food, items on the menu have sold out or been unavailable. It's a lovely little space but there's room for improvement.

Food was a big let down. I ordered a Halumi salad which on the menu card sounded so appetising and exciting with endless ingredients and elements in it but it was so dry and so disappointing. Could not taste anything as mentioned on the menu but only over powering kale and dry quinoa. Everything else was just sprinkled in tiny amounts, the nuts, the salted ricotta and next to nothing lime chilli dressing. Mentioned to the staff, which she was apologetic about but that’s it. Don’t see myself coming again for that food for that price.

If you are a parent of little ones and don't know about Shillinglaw (where have you been??), let me introduce you to your new favorite cafe! Large shaded outdoor play area with synthetic turf, a big sand pit and lots of toys. They have a dozen high chairs and a change table in the toilets. They even supply coloured pencils and paper if your kids like that sort of thing. There's also an awesome playground right next door that you can visit after you finish up at the cafe. The indoor area is pretty small so Shillinglaw may not be the best choice on a day with poor weather. The food is good and fairly reasonably priced. Great chips. Would love more meat and dairy free options. Lot's of drinks to choose from and it's even licenced in case you wanted something stronger. The reason I gave no more than 3 stars is because of the service. The staff are generally pretty friendly but there is a serious training issue or something going on because there are often problems. Food is often VERY slow to arrive, even when they don't seem particularly busy and even if you've only ordered a muffin or toast. Food frequently fails arrive at all (about 1 in 3 times, someone at my table has not received something). This is obviously a real problem and something isn't working right because it happens far too often. There's a sign that says 'Please wait to be seated', but you can stand there for ages with staff buzzing around past you without being acknowledged (I think they should remove the sign or train the staff to seat you). I imagine these factors would greatly limit the popularly of the place if it wasn't for the play area. But that should be no excuse not to work on having good service. There's no minimum on eftpos. Note that there's a sign to say no bill splitting at busy times, but they've done it for me before. The kitchen closes at 2pm on weekdays and the whole cafe closes at 3pm (add an hour for both on weekends). This seems a little early to me. What about all those mums who go for a coffee with the little ones before picking the big ones up from school? Plus I would have thought people would still like to eat after 2pm. Please note that if you have enough time, it's worth picking up the bits of food left behind from your little ones. The staff can't vacuum or sweep the turf, but have to pick up the bits with their hands. Despite the service issues, the play area makes Shillinglaw an excellent place for parents to come and enjoy a drink or a meal while their kids are happy playing.
