Scenic Hotel Bay Of Islands is actually closer to a motel than a hotel, but that's good, because there's easy access to the units for weary travelers from the car parking. Management kindly upgraded our family to a gorgeous unit with vaulted ceilings in a very quiet area adjoining a small garden playground for the kids and the pool, which is right by the restaurant. Everything was perfect and practical and the beds comfy. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is well worth paying a little more for. Flaws? Well, you could quibble that there are only 9 channels on the TV, and that there's no cutlery/plates in the unit there are glasses but that's no deal-breaker. Recommended.
The rooms are OK, pretty basic but clean. Not much of a view for being called the scenic hotel. The breakfast buffet was very basic. Good location and easy to walk to the wharf.Rooms: 3/5
This was an OK stay but with some minor flaws. We liked the location of this hotel which is in easy walking distance to the town, restaurants and wharf yet off the busy main street in a tranquil setting. We did not eat in the restaurant but they were happy to provide us with ice on request. The hotel has a robust tour bus operation and there were buses unloading and loading in front of our room morning and night. Apparently, the housekeeping team has to turn the rooms over quickly and we found ours to be not as clean as we expected. The bed and bath linens were nice and crisp but we found a used washcloth hanging over the shower curtain, some hair on the bathroom floor, along with a few dead bugs in the area of the kitchenette which had a small refrigerator that either iced up or leaked throughout the stay. The room had a musty wet smell due to poor ventilation. When we showered, even with the exhaust fan on and the one window open, the entire sliding door fogged up and dripped with moisture.
Thankfully we only paid for one night. While it is overall fine for a nights stay, this room is not worth the price that was paid for it. We didn't use the restaurant or other facilities so cannot comment on those. Pros: ensuite bathroom, fridge, air-conditioning unit, TV, clean Cons: lumpy, sunken bed, warm not hot shower, insufficient parking in vicinity of rooms, wifi was slow and any videos watched were blurry I wouldn't choose to stay here again unfortunately
Location is great, handy to beach and shops. Otdoor ambience is nice. Reception staff very friendly and great service. There was bit of smell in the rooms. We asked recetion for room freshner. Which they quickly acted upon by doing a carpet deodorizer spray! Only issue we had is about house keeping staff. They didn't do great job when tidying the room. Our bed sheets were not changed on even third day when we left the sign to make the room. Bathrooms not cleaned and Towels not changed. All they did was just tiny bit tidy the bed. Left new milk, coffee and toilet roll. There was no sink in kitchen was we rinsed the drink cups in batroom sink but left in the morning. Thinking they will change cups and spoons when they make room. But nothing was changed in the same cups were still sitting in the room. Moreover, we feel when we were given the room on first day, the Bbathrooms were not cleaned properly. They really need to audit the work of their house keeping staff. Not happy with that at all. Rooms: Rooms bit smelly probably due to house keeping staff not doing proper job I feel.
Perfect place to stay with a well appointed room. The restaurant meals were delicious and the pool was refreshing after a hot day. Third time staying I will be back. Nearby activities: Paihia is amazing, lots to see and do as well as access to water activities and of course the Waitangi Treaty grounds are a pleasant walk or a short car ride. Food & drinks: We had dinner and the service was amazing. The waitstaff were friendly and helpful. And the meals were cooked perfectly and generous portions.
Some very nice workers friendly. The shower could have been alot cleaner, and says you got sky TV but mine never worked and asked for help from a front desk man worker and wouldn't give any help to fix was there for a week payed $2000 and had no working sky TV to enjoying at night in bed before sleep. Wasn't worth the price for room as was very basic no cooking essentials in room either.
The hotel and staff were great, and it was situated near the beach and shops. The room was a little strange as the double bed was in the main living room and a twin room was off that. It was quite old fashioned inside but sufficed for what we needed. The buffet breakfast was fab and the staff very attentive !
The stay was really amazing, fully serviced. The pool was amazing, especially after a long drive, the kids love it. The buffet breakfast was lovely, full spread, will definitely come and stay here again. Food & drinks: Definitely do the buffet breakfast.
