Rippon Lea House & Gardens

Story

Rippon Lea Estate is a heritage-listed historic house and gardens located in Elsternwick, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is in the care of the National Trust of Australia. It was added to the Australian National Heritage List on 11 August 2006..HistoryThe Rippon Lea Estate was built in 1868 for Sir Frederick Sargood, a wealthy Melbourne businessman, politician and philanthropist. Frederick and his wife Marion purchased Crown Allotment 253 and either all, or part of Crown Allotment 260 in the Parish of Prahran, Elsternwick giving them a total area of 26acre. Located about 8 kilometres from the Melbourne central business district, he contracted a two-storey, 15 room house be built. An extensive pleasure garden was laid out around the house, together with glasshouses, vegetable gardens and orchards. The gardens were designed to be self-sufficient as regards water, and the large man-made lake on the property was designed to store stormwater run-off from the surrounding area. By the late 1870s Rippon Lea was a total of 45acre with the kitchen garden alone taking up 2acre.The Sargood family lived at Rippon Lea until Frederick's death in 1903, and over the years extended the house on several occasions. The greatest structural changes occurred in 1897 when the house was extended to the north, and a tower was added. The style of the house has been described as "polychromatic romanesque" and the architect, Joseph Reed, was said to have been inspired by the architecture of the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The house also contained many other innovations; it was one of the first in Australia to be lit by electricity, produced by its own generators, and Sargood employed a full-time electrician to maintain the system, and the fittings included an electrically powered bell system to communicate with the servants quarters and kitchens below stairs.

I'd recommend that if you go to this place for the first time, you should probably go early to take a walk and have a look at everything. Remember to keep your map with you. There is a beautiful back garden and a small lake; it's worth the visit for just $15. The house is very well-kept, as there is no damp smell or any bad smell. The house is truly amazing; it feels like you are in a movie. The house looks better outside than in the photo.
It's a beautiful mansion. Our guides were great and very knowledgeable. Shame the old owner Louise ruined it in her attempts to modernize it. Painting over the marble. Painting over the wallpaper. Painting over the gilt frames. I hope the National Trust decides to reverse her damages to the house. Anyone who tries to modernize a historic home or mansion in this case is a disgrace in my eyes. Plenty of on street parking. The gardens are beautiful with it's lake, out buildings and even a rather bizarre childs play area in the shape on a turtle shell. Public toilets are available in the gardens. $15 entry for adults
Some friends and I attended Rippon Lea Estate for the Annual Regency Picnic 2024. Safe to say we were all stunned by how beautiful the manor and it's gardens were.nnReally affordable entry at $15.00 per person. Tours inside the main residence can be purchased for an additional fee.nnCentral location, somewhat close to public transport. Within walking distance Parking is only available in side streets and I believe is limited to 2 hours on weekdays.nnSome areas of the residence and grounds are not accessible friendly due to steep hills/steps. That being said, majority of the grounds are quite friendly for those who rely on mobility devices.nnA simply gorgeous spot to spend an afternoon with friends or family for a wander and little picnic. Would reccomend and will attend again!
We came to see the Tinker Bell and Dream Fairies. Very nice interactive experience. I was concern of parking but there are lots of parking locally. The park is well maintained, plenty of space and shade. Bring a picnic rug, perfect for picnic and young children to run around on the lawn. I would like to visit again.
The property was beautiful and the garden was a well-tended. There could easily be a small cafe on site but the ad hoc coffee in paper cups was welcome at the end of our visit. On street parking is available. There's no car park.
