On 8th March, I visited Jervois Steak House with three friends to celebrate International Women’s Day, and what should have been a pleasant meal turned into an infuriating nightmare with serious health consequences. We ordered Scotch fillet steaks with clear doneness requests, but what arrived was completely unacceptable: the steaks were so over-salted they were bitter and inedible, with all four of us finishing our water glasses in under 20 minutes, and the doneness was wildly off – our medium rare order came out medium, while our medium steak was cooked well done with no pink in the centre. For a high-end steakhouse hyped as New Zealand’s number 1 on social media, it is beyond unacceptable that they cannot get the absolute basics of a steak right. When a server checked in 10 minutes after our steaks arrived, we’d only taken one or two bites and politely said “everything looks good so far”, but as we ate, the saltiness became unbearable. We flagged down a server for water refills and repeatedly stressed the steaks were far too salty, with the server confirming he would pass this on to the manager. We also had to get the water jug ourselves on one occasion, as we couldn’t find a server with empty glasses – all of this is verifiable on the restaurant’s CCTV. When we paid the bill, the duty supervisor asked about our experience, and we again raised the issues with the steaks, with him promising to report this immediately. We paid the full bill, expecting our in-person feedback to be taken seriously, only to receive an email on Monday full of blatant lies, claiming we “raised no concerns during the meal and only complained after finishing”. All four of us can testify to our multiple feedback attempts, and we will not accept this behaviour from a high-end steakhouse that refuses to take responsibility and shifts blame onto its customers. On the way home from the restaurant, I developed severe gastrointestinal distress: excruciating abdominal pain, intense nausea, vomiting in the car, and diarrhoea that lasted four to five hours straight. This caused huge hassle for my family, and left me so weak and dehydrated I could not attend school the next day, missing my classes entirely. This is not a normal reaction to over-salted food, and I have every reason to suspect this was food poisoning. What made us livid most of all was the restaurant’s response email, which was full of nothing but lies and insincere platitudes. They pay lip service to valuing customer feedback, yet refuse to acknowledge the core issues with our steaks, hiding behind lazy excuses for their abysmal quality control. They lied about reviewing the night’s service flow, took our initial polite comment out of context, and even had the audacity to claim we limited their opportunity to fix the issue. To top it all off, they made a fake, insincere offer to invite us back to win our trust, yet they cannot even admit basic facts – this offer was nothing but an insult. A high-end restaurant is supposed to prioritise food quality, customer feedback and food safety above all else, yet Jervois Steak House has chosen to deny the facts, lie to cover up its failures, and show complete disregard for its customers’ health. This total lack of responsibility and integrity is absolutely shocking, so do yourself a favour: save your money, your taste buds and your health, and avoid this restaurant at all costs.
We were warmly welcomed, the staff was so sweet.nFood and quality were great. We wanted to try many things but our stomach was not big enough, we even packed a doggy bag for the left overs ;
Unfortunately the Scotch steak medium was very salty, and the doneness was not correct with almost no pink centre.nnWe informed the staff during the meal and again when paying, but nothing was done. Disappointing for a restaurant at this price level.
After watching some tiktoks we decided while we were in town we should try it and WOWnnWe ordered takeaway roasted Bone marrow, Waldorf and Caesar salad as a starter then T-bone and Rib-eye as our main. There was absolutely nothing to fault. The bone marrow was the main feature of this dinner. $298 for four people with a leftovers nnThank you TikTok you got it right this time
We absolutely enjoyed “POWER LUNCH” on Friday. The meat and wine were very delicious. The staff were polite and friendly, and the atmosphere was wonderful. We’d love to go there again.
