Ipswich Hospital

Story

Ipswich Mental Hospital is a heritage-listed psychiatric hospital at 3 Parker Avenue, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Queensland Works Department and built from 1933 to 1940. It is also known as Ipswich Hospital for the Insane, Sandy Gallop Asylum, and Challinor Centre. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 2 December 1996.HistorySandy Gallop asylum, as it was first known, was established in 1878 as a branch asylum of the Goodna asylum. It occupied a 140-acre site on the southern outskirts of Ipswich. The main building consisted of a single storey timber and masonry structure which contained three dormitories and two day rooms. The asylum received mainly chronic cases from Goodna. By the 1880s, it was accommodating more that 100 patients. The constant growth in admissions of patients to asylums in Queensland prompted the creation of Sandy Gallop as a separate institution. From 1910 it was known as the Ipswich Hospital for the Insane. A major building program was undertaken between 1908 and 1917 at the instigation of James Hogg who was the Inspector of Hospitals for the Insane (1898-1908), and his replacement Henry Byam Ellerton (1909-1937). Buildings erected included two male wards, three female wards, hospital, administration building, laundry, recreation hall, kitchen, boiler house, and medical superintendent's residence. By 1920 the asylum was accommodating almost 450 patients.

Staff are friendly and very understanding. I personally would like to thank the head doctor, nurses and ambulance officers in meeting my brothers final wishes. Although he couldn't communicate this to you all. I know he really appreciated being alone with loved ones as he took his final breathe.

Only giving one star as it isn’t possible to give none. Spent the night in the ER after a miscarriage and hemorrhage and it was pretty much the worst experience of my life and the nursing staff could not have cared less. I had to ask for clean clothes because mine were soaked in blood. I had to ask whenever I needed anything. I had to stand around and wait for a nurse to finish her engagement story before I could get any help. They were supposed to check me on a regular basis but it didn’t happen at all. Went from there to a private hospital and the care was like night and day. The only people that cared and offered sympathy and treated me like a person where the ambulance staff. They were amazing.

Emergency department is full and the nurses impatient. We ended up driving to the Brisbane Mater instead. I also had my second born here. Was in active labour and headed to the emergency department as that's what we had been told to do out of hours should I go into labour. Turns out we were ten minutes after opening hours. It was raining. I'm having contractions. And the hospital couldn't lend us a wheelchair or send us through via their shortcut. No, they told me go outside and walk around to the main entrance. Those who know ipswich hospital know this isn't on flat ground nor is it the shortest journey - especially when your body is preparing to push a baby out!! I was not impressed. Then there was a delay in assigning a delivery room despite a few being empty. I ended up breaking my waters in the hallway. A nurse took my baby off me during the night despite me stating that I knew the risks and wished for him to stay on my chest. Lastly when I needed formula (for which I wasn't allowed to prepare) it took a whole hour. My family was able to bring some from the shops sooner than they had made it. A screaming starving newborn did not cause any rush on their behalf. I understand a small delay but this was ridiculous.
