Golden Age Cinema & Bar

About

Cults, classics, creepies, cheapies & the best new releases. The good old days are now.

Story

Golden Age Cinema and Bar has restored and reinvented the old screening room of the heritage-listed Paramount Pictures building in Surry Hills, Sydney. The bar is open six nights a week and, right next door, our beautiful 1940s cinema will host two screenings a night, with matinees on the weekend. For tickets visit our website www.ourgoldenage.com.au.

MORE ABOUT THE CINEMA

The former screening room of Paramount House has been carefully renovated by a bewitching collective of architects, interior designers, auteurs and furniture makers. It brings together the past, present and future to create a unique environment for people to watch films, enjoy a drink or host an event.

MORE ABOUT THE BAR

No movie ticket? No problem. You are always welcome in the bar which is open before, during and after each screening. Tucked away beneath the street, we’ve brought together some of the most interesting producers we could find to cast a great list of quality wines, beers, cocktails and food. The bar also serves cinema snacks and film-inspired food specials to match our cinema program.

MORE ABOUT THE PARAMOUNT HOUSE

Paramount House is a cultural, architectural and literal cornerstone of the area of Surry Hills once known as the ‘Hollywood Quarter’. Built in 1940 in a Late Deco style, it shows how elegance can be achieved by focusing on what is essential. Already regarded as a hub for many of Sydney’s creative businesses, the story of Paramount House is only just beginning.

The best kept secret in all of Sydney. I love the decor and the modern-meets-old-school vibe of the place. Always showing interesting movies but the tickets are kinda expensive, but that's understandable when there's only one screen! The free gigs and movie trivia are also excellent reasons to visit. (It's also worth noting that the bar does serve food, if you want a light snack before your movie)

Really great theatre. Shows super cool films, great bar + bartenders, and live music venue. What I like most about the music is how different than artists they get are. One of the nights I was there they had a full on Tom Waits sort of guy; place is neat.

I wanted to love this place - the idea of a boutique cinema that shows classics is very appealing to me. Unfortunately, while the film schedule is great and the aesthetics of the bar are great, this place is lacking in the only area that matters - viewing experience. The seats and small and uncomfortable. During the screening, a moth was flying around in front of the (small) screen and staff did nothing about it. Patrons behind me were drunk and loudly talking during the movie - despite assurances on the website that the crowds here respect cinema. I found myself wishing for Event Cinemas during the whole experience. Eventually the people behind us became too much and we left to finish the movie in the comfort of our apartment, which was 10 times more enjoyable. Sadly just another case of Sydney aping what other cities are able to provide, but falling short in all the important areas.

A unique cinema experience in the heart of Surry Hills. Heritage listed building used to house small bar and movie theatre. Great range of drinks and the traditional choc tops and popcorn. Showing an interesting range of movies this makes for a great experience as a couple or small group.

Awesome as usual. Great mood, fine drinks, fine movies in a retro environment. My only regret is that toasties were sold out because of the trivia night crowd. Trivia people stole my toasties! Joking, but those toasties really rock.
