Not great - fried dim sim not cooked enough so outer was chewy and completely white; potato cakes are kind of pasty and bland. Prawn batter/crumb had nice flavour but the prawn was very tough. Fish itself was tasty, and a very generous portion and thickness - unfortunately the batter is way too thick and oily - had to take most of the batter off. Staff are a definite plus - very polite and professional enough. Pity the food was so subpar
***UPDATED REVIEW!! JULY 2019: Although I’m roughly 3 months late doing this, I unfortunately must be the bearer of bad news & say that FLAKEY JAKES in CRANBOURNE NORTH - Yes! This very FLAKEY JAKES one is - GOHWENNNNN ie. gone! This local fish & chip shop is consistently busy most nights & to me - that's always been an easy way to tell if it's a decent take away shop or not... & of course - the other way to tell is simply by going in & trying the food for yourself right! & that's exactly what we do I suggest to call ahead with your order, as it approximately takes 8-12 mins on average for them to prepare your food & have it all ready for you to collect - so it saves you time waiting. Flakey Jakes takes phone orders with no mimimum charge & they except orders for immediate pick up, as well as requests to have an order ready by a certain time. That is especially important for anyone that is wanting to place larger orders. There is also a minimum spend cost of $10 in store - for those who wish to pay by card. & so, it's also handy to be told what the cost of your order will be - prior to collecting it - as you can be prepared. Their prices are average fish & chip shop prices - as far I'm aware... I think they're definately not rip-off merchants - but I must say that they could be a little more generous & cobsistent when making their potato cakes... Some are pretty good - more often though - they are on the smaller side... But they will also sometimes be too tiny... Not always but maybe every 2nd or 3rd time - we will find that 1 or 2 of our potato cakes out of 6 would be more aptly named if they were called potato bites! But that's my real only complaint that I have about the service & food we get from Flakey Jakes... Something that I do personally like is how they don't go crazy on the amount of salt they put on your chips - as I am not a real lover of overly salty food. However, my husband is! & so he's always whinging about how they never put enough salt on his food! Lol But as my nanna used to say - You can only please some of the people - some of the time... & it's simply impossible to please all of the people, let alone - all of the time!
Only thing the fish set has got going for it is the large size. Otherwise tasted better and been served better.
Order a hamburger with the lot no pineapple no beat root as I have allergic reaction to it got home it has both of them on it luckily I looked rang them up and all I got was an argument from manager and a laugh when I said I have an allergic reaction to this would not recommend them at all if this is how they treat customers!!!
