Federal Coffee Palace

About

Great cafe with an unbeatable location!

Story

Taking its inspiration from a unique feature of Melbourne's history; Federal Coffee Palace was inspired by the 1880s when grand and majestic temperance hotels (aka 'coffee palaces') refusing to sell alcohol were all the rage...however the venue is now thankfully fully licensed!

With an exciting range of light snacks, fantastic cooked breakfasts and constant stream of delicious daily specials. This is definitely the place for a civilised breakfast, lunch or a glass or two of wine. The contemporary decor and slick service style are designed to reflect the fashionable GPO development on Bourke Street.

"Combining the elegance of the GPO’s historic arches and the vibrant buzz of the city, Federal Coffee has established itself as one of Melbourne CBD’s best coffee venues. Consistently producing a high standard of silky, smooth coffee, it offers something for everyone; quick take away coffees from their corner cart on Bourke Street or a foodie delight along their café on Elizabeth Street. Expect perfectly cooked breakfasts, brunch, lunch, an array of delicious pastries, followed by a variety of wholesome sandwiches and tempting daily specials. All served with a smile by their friendly and ever professional staff."

Absolutely beautiful coffee. The eggs Benedict was unbelievable. Sour dough bread was crunchy and delicious. Eggs where perfectly poached. Herb emulsion was a great touch. If you are in the city. And belly is rumbling or just need a great coffee. This is a MUST to try. Wheelchair accessibility: Good space for wheelchair accessibility and seating. Ramp for wheelchair access.
This cafe is on the ground floor of the historic General Post Office on Elizabeth Street. Lots of outdoor seating available. I had a pulled pork sandwich and it was incredibly yummy. The cheese was perfectly melted, the pulled pork was slow cooked beautifully. The cappuccino was also very good.
Jay, the waiter, added a lot of friendliness to my visit and was keen to keep me happy. Blue Swimmer Crab scrambled eggs are cooked to perfection, not sloppy not hard/dry. 10/10 A great spot to linger, drink one's coffee whilst watching life go by.
Plain croissant Chilli scrambled egg with avo smashed avo smashed was cold and meh, personally reviewed. Overall food was just alright.
I’ve always noticed their little kiosk on the corner right next to the main entrance of H&M that serves coffee & pastries, only to realize that they have a restaurant nearby, with seats, and serves food. So I decided to try their breakfast, and ordered the scrambled Eggs on Toast with 2 Side: salmon & avocado. It was served with relish on the side. The eggs were nice & fluffy, and both the salmon & avocado were fresh. The only thing I didn’t like was the relish. It just didn’t go well with the food at all. Loved their coffee and keep coming back for the coffee whenever I am in the area. Quick & friendly service, and perfectly located overlooking Elizabeth Street.
At a beautiful location just at the corner of Bourke Street mall, this European-styled cafe will be an ideal place for some coffee/brunch after a shopping day or city visit. Abundant choices on the menu to select from. Prices are not to high for one at the heart of the CBD. We ordered a scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon and mushroom french tacos, both of which were satisfying. The food took a while to be served though. Above all, the service was very friendly.
I dont know how, but they made chilli crab for breakfast work. Take it with magic while enjoying the view and people-watching in Bourke St.Food: 4/5
Lovely French style cafe in the heart of the city - a perfect location to take a break from shopping or people watching. Loved their salmon, coffee was great and portions quite generous too.
"Best breakfast I've ever had" - my 8 year old daughter picky eater. Great service, great coffee, great hot chocolate and superb French Toast. Would give 6 stars if it were possible!
With an alfresco dining at the majestic GPO building, this is a perfect place for a brunch date with your significant others or with friends the spot is a wonderful place to take a break and enjoy delicious foods and drinks whilst watching the fast paced Melbourne go by! We enjoyed a boozy brunch with some sparkling wine whilst we enjoyed the dishes we ordered! FRENCH TOAST- triple cooked French toast with lavender creme anglaise, seasonal fruit & dark chocolate POACHED SALMON- salmon filet, Yarra Valley salmon caviar, herb hollandaise, asparagus, tomato & potato salad We absolutely loved both the dishes and the whole atmosphere just reminded us of being in Paris don't have time to sit down? Visit their takeaway kiosk where you can grab yourself a coffee, pastry or a to-go-meal. The kiosk is so picturesque and defs has that Parisienne vibe!
