Story

Located on historic Lydiard Street in the heart of beautiful Ballarat, Craig’s Royal Hotel is a destination in itself.

The legendary Australian gold-rush era grand hotel is a true icon of the Victorian period. Opening in 1853, it has played host to poets, princes and prime ministers over its 160-year history. Now, after extensive restoration, the magnificent accommodation, dining experiences and business facilities offered, are also establishing Craig’s as a modern day icon.

Stay in one of the 41 luxurious rooms or suites, where elaborate attention to detail is evident in every finishing.

Enjoy a coffee and cake in Craig’s Larder café & local produce store, or a drink in the legendary Craig’s bar, with its antique carved Australian cedar detail.

Dine in The Gallery, where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch basking in the sun-drenched conservatory or dinner under the stars. The seasonal menu produced by head chef Shannon Easton highlights some of the best local produce on offer, matched with an extensive wine list, featuring both local and international wines.

If you’re looking to entertain, why not host a private party in the original bluestone cellar? Or if you’re looking for a beautiful historical wedding space, celebrate your special day in any of the three stunning banquet rooms.

If you’re looking to experience the extraordinary, then it’s time you experienced Craig’s.

Fantastic hotel that has maintained its old world charm. We had a two night stay, travelling from interstate. Was great to stay in a hotel that had character !nLocation - central to everything, walking distance to restaurants and some shops. Metered parking out the front, which suited us as we were out & about sightseeing.nRooms - amazing, loved the character, spacious bathrooms.nStaff - fantastic! Greeted by a wonderful friendly reception, the lovely lady took the time to explain everything about our reservation and facilities. All the staff were friendly and welcoming.nDining/meals - lovely reception area in the lobby for drinks, meals, breakfast, tea/coffee and cake ! You don’t need to leave the hotel if you don’t want too!
Sadly my stay was extremely disappointing. The manager ruined the experience entirely with a dismissive attitude and lack of basic human respect. Having called in advance of my stay to confirm parking and hypoallergenic requirements for my husband, I received neither. The manager admitted that the person who received my request had since left but then stated she would do nothing to make amends. The customer service was so appallingly bad that not only did she refuse to offer anything but she laughed when we said we'd spent $2000 and couldn't even park our car at the hotel stating 'that's not even that much money'. She had me in tears on the phone before we even arrived and it was clear the staff were all terrified of her, telling us to go 'above her head because she won't listen'. Whilst current management is in charge I would tell everyone not to waste their money. The safe and the plumbing were broken in our room and there were no added extras. Sadly there is so much potential as the venue itself is beautiful. I see the hotel apologising online but yet clearly nothing is changing and excuses are being made. Absolutely shocking! An overpriced and miserable experience.
So disappointing. Booked a 2nt stay in a heritage room with breakfast. Room was small and cluttered with nothing to suggest heritage. Hotel has obviously seen better days and has threadbare carpets on the main stairs and worn furniture in the rooms. The shower in our bathroom was so low on the wall we couldn't use it.nBreakfast service was underwhelming and I think we were a big inconvenience to the lady who served us.nWe had to check out early due to some sad family news we received. We were obviously very upset when checking out but the receptionist had absolutely no interest and we were charged for our 2nd night even though we were checking out a day early. We didn't necessarily expect a full refund but the receptionist had no people skills or manners.nThis hotel is trading on its past and we felt ripped off.
A charming hotel with wonderful staff. We visited Ballarat for a function at the university just a block away and were very pleasantly surprised by the beautiful hotel. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and the location was very convenient. Parking is mostly in the street but it's $3 and hour and the first hour is free. After 5:30 it's free until 9am so not a problem. Highly recommended.
Grace the manager is rude, put blame on everyone else and will not compensate anything for a mismanaged booking. Also made it so we couldn’t cancel our reservation and receive a refund for a 24hr clause when we had tried to the day before but no staff were trained in how to sort it. They also seemed uncomfortable around her which isn’t surprising.nnParking reservation was lost, feather pillows were never changed as we are highly allergic and there was not a care in the world. Also having a paid minibar in a room that costs $440 per night is ridiculous.nnWe spent thousands on this accommodation and will never be returning. We also have friends having a wedding in Ballarat next year and will make sure this hotel is not used in any way.
