Story

Located on historic Lydiard Street in the heart of beautiful Ballarat, Craig’s Royal Hotel is a destination in itself.

The legendary Australian gold-rush era grand hotel is a true icon of the Victorian period. Opening in 1853, it has played host to poets, princes and prime ministers over its 160-year history. Now, after extensive restoration, the magnificent accommodation, dining experiences and business facilities offered, are also establishing Craig’s as a modern day icon.

Stay in one of the 41 luxurious rooms or suites, where elaborate attention to detail is evident in every finishing.

Enjoy a coffee and cake in Craig’s Larder café & local produce store, or a drink in the legendary Craig’s bar, with its antique carved Australian cedar detail.

Dine in The Gallery, where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch basking in the sun-drenched conservatory or dinner under the stars. The seasonal menu produced by head chef Shannon Easton highlights some of the best local produce on offer, matched with an extensive wine list, featuring both local and international wines.

If you’re looking to entertain, why not host a private party in the original bluestone cellar? Or if you’re looking for a beautiful historical wedding space, celebrate your special day in any of the three stunning banquet rooms.

If you’re looking to experience the extraordinary, then it’s time you experienced Craig’s.

Craig’s Royal Hotel is an incredibly historically significant hotel and a true architectural gem in Victoria’s crown.nnThe really brilliant thing is that this iconic Victorian masterpiece is open for anyone to come here anytime and enjoy a drink or a meal. I live in Ballarat, so I don’t need to sleep here, but I still drop in to enjoy the hotel regularly.nnThe building really is too beautiful for words, and the hotel has the loveliest customer service team possible. The team at Craig’s are unerringly sweet, kind, helpful, genuine and good-natured.nnThey deliver a wonderful experience every time. They do it with grace, style, country hospitality and genuine care, and that, to me, is way better than slick, fast, impersonal service.nnI love Craig’s, I love the vibe, I love the service, and I’ll be back regularly for many years to come.nnKeep up the sensational work, team!
Amazing building that has been well looked after and a great place for a meal and a drink. Looking forward to trying the accommodation, the rooms look great. Didn't rate the rooms as did not experience that aspect. Needs special considerations for disability accessibility.
We stayed for one night at this magnificent hotel, the history of the hotel is epic and the decor is absolutely true to the heritage of the building. The staff were all brilliant and very friendly. Our breakfast in the beautiful atrium dining room was delicious. Extremely reasonable prices. We highly recommend this hotel for a stay and we will definitely be back.
This historic landmark in Ballarat is an impressive sight and significantly adds to the character of this heritage town built on gold.nYou can visit the hotel for a drink, enjoy high tea, dine here or stay. No two rooms are the same.nThe Victorian hotel which was also the town's first licenced pub features a decorative balcony overlooking Her Majesty's theatre across the street and an iconic turret.nRoyals, former Prime Ministers, writers and celebrities have stayed here since the 1850s.nHere are a few photos of this striking hotel.
Magnificent building and well appointed rooms. Good price however the air-conditioning wasn't working for the 2 nights , hottest of the year. A fan made it bearable but given the hallways were working it was unfortunate. Heaps of afterhours car parking outside. Restaurant was lovely, the orange cake was a little dry. Excellent service, we'll come back and hopefully the aircon is fixed.
