Story

Located on historic Lydiard Street in the heart of beautiful Ballarat, Craig’s Royal Hotel is a destination in itself.

The legendary Australian gold-rush era grand hotel is a true icon of the Victorian period. Opening in 1853, it has played host to poets, princes and prime ministers over its 160-year history. Now, after extensive restoration, the magnificent accommodation, dining experiences and business facilities offered, are also establishing Craig’s as a modern day icon.

Stay in one of the 41 luxurious rooms or suites, where elaborate attention to detail is evident in every finishing.

Enjoy a coffee and cake in Craig’s Larder café & local produce store, or a drink in the legendary Craig’s bar, with its antique carved Australian cedar detail.

Dine in The Gallery, where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch basking in the sun-drenched conservatory or dinner under the stars. The seasonal menu produced by head chef Shannon Easton highlights some of the best local produce on offer, matched with an extensive wine list, featuring both local and international wines.

If you’re looking to entertain, why not host a private party in the original bluestone cellar? Or if you’re looking for a beautiful historical wedding space, celebrate your special day in any of the three stunning banquet rooms.

If you’re looking to experience the extraordinary, then it’s time you experienced Craig’s.

This was a very beautiful hotel. Great history and amazing staff. Rooms were awesome, and the location of restaurants was excellent. If you want to park in the hotel, make sure you book ahead as spaces are very limited. The restaurant was excellent and had a great selection of excellent meals. The old-fashioned lift was particularly fun for the young ones while it brought back memories for me.
Amazing hotel steeped in history and beautifully maintained. I was offered a look in the function rooms and they are lovely. I’ve attached some photos, but I don’t think they do the Hotel justice.nYes, there are some quirks with a heritage building, but so worthwhile to experience the luxury side of the Goldrush era.
This place is very disappointing.nnWe stayed there with high expectations which doesn't help but with a place with this type of reputation and history it's what you expect.nnThe room was clean however felt very claustrophobic with no room to move due to the heavy, bulky inappropriate furniture that had been chosen for a small room room 206 in case management read this but maybe all rooms are the same.nnThe toilet did not work, after one flush no refill, we reported and through no fault of their own, staff were unable to help.nnThe alternative given was opening a public toilet on a different level of the hotel.nnThey did their best to fix but of course they are not plumbers.nnWe asked for another room and were told are booked out, we didn't challenge this but very hard to believe. I expect they didn't feel able to offer an upgrade to a working room.nnWe then spent the night freezing on a 0 degree night in Ballarat.nnThere is a poor wall heater and similar in bathroom. No extra heating provided, my wife was so cold she was going to go and sleep in the foyer.nnMy father was also staying that night and said there was a blower heater in his room so I went hunting but there was none available.nnNo compensation was offered.nnTerrible place that looks good but it's all pretend, would not recommend.nnTo be clear this is no fault of duty staff, they did their best but clearly not empowered by management to deliver best service when something goes wrong.nnThey might want to consider investing one nights profit from one of their pokie machines into a decent heater and TV for each room.
Average stay based on the fact the parma was one of the worst I have ever had. How hard is it to make a good parma???There was no Napoli sauce on the chicken! Very dry. Other than this, nice rooms. I’ll skip the restaurant next time.
We recently had a family lunch at Craig’s in honour of my dad who had died. My parents got married here, and my mums parents before them so we have a long history with Craig’s. Heidi functions coordinator was fantastic to deal with right from the start. She was sensitive, kind and helpful. In the day we had the Bentley’s room all to ourselves and this was excellent. The team helped me when I had the wrong connector for my laptop to the tv, showed us how to play music, gave their condolences and a lovely bunch of flowers to our family. Heidi and the wait staff were attentive without being intrusive and we were able to give my dad a beautiful send off. Thankyou so much!
