Story

Das Kaffeehaus is an ode to Vienna, the heart land. With it's rich furnishings and extravagant decor, even the simplest pleasure of drinking coffee is an experience. With a menu that stays true to Viennese culture, you can sit back and enjoy a moment straight out of a Viennese Kaffeehaus without even leaving the country.

The Schaerf family have been a leading name in the central European coffee industry for over 50 years. Coffee Basics brings this dedication and experience to all their products. Roasting coffee on site at Das Kaffeehaus and selling house and custom made blends through retail and wholesale. Our roastery team are dedicated to bringing you the best quality coffee money can buy.

We dined at 9:00 on a Monday morning. There were plenty of tables in offer inside and outside.nnThe staff greeted us as we walked in, were very polite, exceedingly friendly and impeccably dressed.nnThis attention to detail expected to the decor, with many pieces curated to add a chic European atmosphere.nnThe menu was broad for any moment of dining and was north watering. I had scrambled eggs, bacon and a kransky and it was divine. My beautiful wife had a crepe with an exquisite apricot jelly. The food arrived very quickly and it was hit and excellently prepared.nnThe coffee was exceptional.nnThis was a terrific experience from start to finish.
Wow, wow and wow! 5 stars all around. Great food service and atmosphere.nJust had a a basic coffee and a crescent, but that was delicious. The service was warm and friendly and it’s got a great little vibe.nI’ve been before for a meal which was also brilliant. It’s a very reliable location. Well worth its good reviews!!!
Beautiful atmosphere with a charismatic host. Perfect for when you’re visiting the mill. My dish was delicious which was a beef goulash however my husband was a little disappointed with the spicy sausage dish as he wish it came with some more sides. Nevertheless overall a lovely experience for us visitors.
A difficult review to write. When you enter Coffee Basics Das Kaffeehaus you can tell you are in for something really special. The ambiance, the professional looking team and a chandelier no less in the middle of the space. A group of us came from around Victoria to this central point in Castlemaine for brunch and a catch up. Attentive and friendly service was given to all of us right from the welcome at the front door. There were many Oohs and Ahhs coming from the team as they enjoyed everything from pancakes to various egg and other dishes. All the various coffees were outstanding. I spoke to the waiter about my surprise find in the glass display case. Huge sandwiches, with large slices of bread. I have never seen anything like this before. What a great toasty I thought. The waiter went on to tell me the story that they had recently gone back to this bread after trying another. I was hooked and ordered one…..the waiter joked “When it comes it will be big enough to share”. My coffee came, which as mentioned was excellent however while most had now finished their meals, I was still to get mine, and never did.Disappointed, and yes, I could of said something, but it was way too late now. Would I return? Yes. I am one for second chances.
Excellent service. Staff are quick and efficient in what they do, very welcoming and kind.nApple strudel was a highlight and coffee was delightful. The menu is short and simple, highlighting great food with fair prices. Coffee and hot chocolate were also great.nnThere is a lot happening in the area with an ice cream and chocolate shop right next door, worth visiting.nOutdoor and indoor seating options available, parking can be limited on busier days like school holidays or weekends.
