Story

Calvary Hospital North Adelaide is one of Adelaide's oldest hospitals, having been established before 1900, when the Little Company of Mary Sisters took control of the hospital. It features a large maternity wing. Calvary is a fully operational hospital which, in 2016, had 153 beds. It also has an extensive Mary Potter Hospice and a comprehensive Cancer Centre.It is located on Strangways Terrace in North Adelaide, only two kilometres from the Adelaide city centre.It is owned by parent corporation Little Company of Mary Health Care which, in 2006, acquired Calvary Wakefield Hospital, Calvary Central Districts Hospital and Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital. Due to these acquisitions, the original hospital is now known as Calvary North Adelaide instead of Calvary Hospital Adelaide.

Whilst I cannot fault the nursing staff and their magnificent service and care, I ended up discharging myself. I was admitted for pneumonia and was so tired from lack of sleep from how noisy the hospital was. I had to come home because my stress levels were rising from lack of sleep whilst feeling so ill.nI truly believe that noise levels in hospitals needs to be addressed. Years ago, hospitals were ordered to be quiet to enable rest and recovery. Five different friends all commented on my self discharge as totally understandable . They all had the same comment of how you come home sicker after being in hospital due to lack of sleep.nAgain, the staff were outstanding.
Today, as scheduled, I went to this hospital at 8:40. I had an appointment with the radiology department. Everything was completely different from my understanding of Australian medical institutions over the past 23 years in Australia. Before this, it was a pleasant and comfortable experience; I also received various radiological examinations, all of which were perfect. However, today, due to the doctor’s own mistakes in professional matters, the patient ended up in a situation where there was no hope of recovery! The incident started because I have poor English skills, but the wife has excellent English proficiency. All details were recorded in the form, and the staff took me into the imaging room. The nurse clearly explained the precautions step by step. OK! Then a liquid was injected to take pictures. The nurse tried to give the injection with her right hand for a long time, but it failed twice. Even though she knew that my English was very poor, she kept talking non-stop. Then she switched to her left hand. After some time, she said, “Stop working! There’s no way to complete this.” I had to answer “Yes” and “No” repeatedly. So I had to ask her to stop the injection. I left the room very disappointed and went to meet my wife. I asked the wife to negotiate with the staff. But then something unexpected happened: the attending doctor pointed at us with both hands and ordered us to leave, claiming that if we didn’t leave, they would call the police. How ridiculous! A lack of knowledge about one’s own profession, or even ineffective work behavior, can still provoke anger in those who are supposed to treat the patient. In Australia, there are many medical accidents, but very few cases of rude behavior. I must tell Adelaide citizens that when taking photos at this hospital, they must endure repeated failed injections, along with the stress and pain involved. They always claim that the reason is simply: “You are unhappy! You speak loudly!” If you encounter such situations, you must bear the pain and keep a smiling face; otherwise, you will be expelled from the hospital, and there are threats of reporting to the police and arresting you!!!
Just came home from this hospital today from an operation I just had. I’m actually self admitting I’m a high maintenance patient. I am a smoker and I have a great addiction to smoking and when I can’t, I have massive anxieties and cravings . It can cause many problems in hospitals as nurses don’t usually have any patience for that. But this hospital was exceptional. I’m not proud to be like this I even get ashamed and a lot of times I’m made to feel like a terrible person. I tell you these nurses and drs I spent time with were so great and so understanding that I can’t thank them enough. My care was outstanding and the difference in my attitude in recovery is amazing. I’ve had a lot of surgery’s and health problems and the difference with being treated like a human that has some issues instead of abused for my issues was so good. I usually am confronted with hatred and judgment because I’m addicted to cigarettes and have anxiety but my anxiety comes from the bad experiences from hospitals.nThankyou to all the staff and the people who create the culture there. Thanks for treating me like a human and being understanding.nAnd I would like to give massive praise to my Dr, Dr Sam Rice, he’s such a good guy and positive, it’s nice to see a Dr smile and be human while having amazing professional skills, and my two nurses Kyle man, this nurse was so cool and patient, and I hope his music, playing guitar gives him that special something in life, he’s a talented dude, you were so good to me and I know I was difficult, Thankyou so much for treating me so well and Ferdinand, this dude was cool, thanks for making my stay so much better.nEven all the other nurses just walking past or whatever all were friendly professional and understanding. Fantastic culture there and everyone working there seemed happy to be working there, that says something.n5 out 5.nThanks for my stay.nShaun
My wife gave birth to our baby in early June 2023, led by the superb Dr. Carmel Cocchiaro and her team. This review is solely based on our experiences in the Maternity ward over a 5-day stay.nnOnce you enter the hospital from the reception, turn left and walk around 100m to get to elevators that will get you maternity ward on Level 2. The elevators at the reception won't take you there if you get admitted around 3 am, there might not be anyone around to ask for directions.nnIf you are a first-time parent, the midwives are extremely helpful and will guide you every step of the way. They understand that having a baby is a daunting task and is on call 24/7 to help you out. You just need to press the button in the room to get their help. Since they change every 8 hours, you get exposed to many midwives, and you can learn different tricks and tips from each one of them. Huge thanks to Emily, Hannah, Dee, and all others whom I can't remember the name of. You might encounter a midwife in a bad mood, but that's just a rare occurrence that you can ignore and give them a chance. In short, midwives will be guardian angels for the baby and mum.nnThe rooms are comfortable and the partner will get a foldable bed/couch.nnRegarding the food, you can select from the menu, what you want for the next day. In my view, the food was good, maybe it might not be a five-star hotel, but the variety and quantity are more than sufficient. Vegetarian/Vegan options available. If necessary you can request bottle water to be delivered to the room.nnIn Summary, I would recommend anyone with private health care to evaluate Calvary as an option for having a baby.
Had an amazing experience giving birth to my son at Calvary North Adelaide. The support we received from all the midwives was incredible, they really prepared us for our departure home.nWe highly recommend this hospital if you are having a little one.
