I honestly hesitated between 2 and 3 stars for this place.nnOn the positive side, the location is great and it’s really cheap. The hostel is cute and cozy, with a nice atmosphere. However, it also feels a bit run-down and not super clean in some areas.nnA huge bonus though: the TV room!! It was amazing. There’s a proper lounge setup with armchairs, a convertible chair, a couch, and a big TV with great sound. It’s such a nice space to relax and chill.nnNow for the downsides… The shower situation is honestly strange. It’s literally a tiny room with a shower head attached to the ceiling, and it’s right next to the bedrooms — which is not ideal at all. The bed was also very uncomfortable. You could feel the springs sticking out, and it actually hurt.nnBut nothing compares to the first night we spent there. There’s a bar downstairs, and the noise was insane. We genuinely felt like we were inside the bar. You can literally hear everything, and it went on until at least 2am. I don’t know who had the idea first — the dancing bar or the hostel — but putting them in the same building was not the best decision. It’s definitely a huge negative point.nnThat being said, it does the job when the bar isn’t open.
Boho vibes inside, fun laid back energy but very clean and tidy at the same time! We also had a bathroom in our room which was so nice. The staff were exceptionally friendly, both with activity recommendations and with saying hello and striking up conversation. Located by the wind rod which was whimsical and easy to navigate back to the hostel after adventuring.
Super ratched hostel in the centre of New Plymouth. Their prices are very low, though, so if you're staying for just one night, you'll be fine. Good location and nice staff. Not a quiet place, thanks to the bar/night club next door.
This was mine and my daughters first trip to New Plymouth and staying at a backpackers. Rob made us and our stay so welcoming and homely. Robs knowledge of where to park and whats happening in the area was perfect.nDefinitely recommend Ariki backpackers. We hope one day to come back!
This was my first time living in a hostel in NZ and it was absolutely the best. Yes, the bar next to it is noisy on the weekends until 3 am but they had already texted us in advance about it and we didn't mind! The rooms were warm and cozy and the services and facilities were spot on. Special shout-out to Chris for welcoming us and showing us around, making us feel like we were at home.
