If you are looking for an affordable accomodation offering a good location and spacious quarters both in the rooms as well as in the common areas this is your place. Dining area had an interesting vibe, feeling like a shopping mall food court mixed with an American diner. Also, the design and layout is fairly basic, focusing more on functionalism than style. A refreshing change from some of the pretentious hostels that try to be something they are not! Keep things basic and simple while passing the savings on to the traveler!
Hostel was clean and comfortable. Common areas well maintained and plenty of kitchen tools. Linda at reception was lovely.nMy qualm is that this was the most corporate feeling hostel I’ve ever stayed at. At head of enforcement was the British? Possibly kiwi employee, a gentleman in his 40s?. He was unpleasant to interact with at every level, he was an instant buzzkill whenever he entered the room. Hostel would greatly improve if he got the sack.
Do not go here if you want a “backpacker” experience. If you’re looking for cold vibes, inconsiderate staff and people who are plain rude, go here! They fool ya with their colourful cubes that are never occupied by a soul but god forbid you put your grocery bags on them. Or your backpack for literally a minute just to get it on your back- oh no! Too dirty! I also had a male housekeeper come into the all girls dorm in the middle of me changing. I had asked if I could leave early and get out of the place because I felt so uncomfortable there. The annoyingly cheery in a condescending way chap named Royce gives no shit. Underneath is an older guy who just sees you as another number, not a human being. It’s awful.nOther things occurred too but I want to keep this short. It’s unwelcoming, unfriendly and empty. More corporate than “backpacker”. I actually spent a lot of time with friends in other hostels because this one was so unbearable and I spent an entire day breaking down crying.
I’ve stayed at a lot of YHAs around the world and Nelson was exactly what I hoped for — clean, safe, and super welcoming. Big shoutout to Royce & Linda and all the team who made me feel right at home.nnLocation is spot on, right in the CBD and right by the Abel Tasman shuttle pick-up — super handy for early starts. The hostel has everything you need for a reset between hikes: good showers, a solid kitchen, laundry with $1 detergent scoops, and even a little sauna my tired legs were very grateful for that!.nnLoved the friendly, family vibe here — it was so easy to stay longer than planned. Highly recommend if you’re after a tidy, relaxed base in Nelson without the party hostel chaos.
One of my favourite hostels! Very peaceful and clean, even cleaner than some of the short-term rentals I've stayed in, back in Australia. Friendly staff and spacious dining areas/kitchens. Stayed in a private room here, and they'd also happily change your sheets/vacuum often. It's near the grocery store and galleries, the Nelson market is just round the corner every Saturday, what a convenient location. Will be back for sure, when I return to Nelson :-
