I had a lovely unplanned 3 week stay at the YHA Nelson. I stayed in the female dorm and found it very comfortable, with lots of space and self controlled heating, there's also an infared sauna next door which is great! The hostel was outstandingly clean and the staff worked so hard to clean everything properly. The kitchen and bathrooms were all very nice. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they really made my stay there pleasant. The hostel is in a good location in town and all the events and things to do are advised in reception. Its also right next to the Saturday and Sunday market. The only downside was the extra fees for the internet. I do understand capping but 1GB really isn't enough to do anything on your laptop. Definitely budget that into your stay unlimited for 7days for $10, or 24 hrs for $2 The hostel isn't very social unless you make it but thats what YHAs are known for: clean, safe and comfortable accommodation in great locations. Thanks for having me :
It honestly baffles me to see some of the reviews describing how the staff can be “unfriendly” and the vibes of the hostel being “unbackpackery”. This is genuinely one of the cleanest, well-organised hostel run by friendly, approachable staff, and I am not being paid to say this.nnI been coming back to this same hostel few times for the last nine years. I stayed here as a teenager, and recently again in my mid twenties. I can proudly say that the hostel hasn’t changed a single bit. It’s the same clean, beautiful place as it was before. Royce is humorous and he does everything he can to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience. He even helps you to organise trips and everything.nnApart from this, the hostel is very spacious. It has a great lounge for socialising, and pleasant outdoor space, and TWO very well maintained kitchen spaces with see-through fridges. Showers are awesome. Water pressure is nice. Walls can be little thin, but that’s New Zealand. There are private saunas for one or two persons. Laundry units for affordable prices. $4 for drying and washing each Bunk beds in the dorms are really steady, you hardly hear creaks.nnIt’s also right in the town centre, and right next to the carpark where the region’s biggest farmer’s market takes place every Saturday morning. Could not recommend more. I hope I can come back again soon!nnThanks to the team!
Comfortable for a short stay, but very quiet.nnPros:n• Friendly and helpful staffn• Excellent security and very clean facilities.nnCons:n• Room Size: The private room is very cramped with limited walking space.n• Social Vibe: The atmosphere was quite cold and disconnected. Guests generally did not interact in the common areas, making it hard to feel comfortable or socialize.
While packing for checkout, I gradually moved my belongings from the room to the canteen area, then completed checkout at reception. Around 11am, I moved the remaining items from the canteen to the locker room.nnA few hours later, when I returned to collect my belongings from the locker, I realized that two bags were missing: one small bag containing my glasses and sunglasses, and another plastic bag with personal items such as lotion and mouthwash. I retraced my steps and informed staff, but unfortunately the items were not found.nnI can’t say what happened, but I’d recommend future guests keep personal items and valuables with them at all times during checkout, as moving things between shared spaces can get hectic. Sharing this as a reminder for others.
Clean.nGood bed in private double room.nBad vibes.nOnce you've checked out you are made to feel very unwelcome. I have stayed in many hostels, and managed one, over the last 20 years, and have never come across a hostel where you are not welcome to sit somewhere in a common space after you've checked out. No calm justification as to this strict policy. I was made to feel like an unreasonable child.nPlenty of other options of cheaper and nicer looking places to stay in Nelson. I won't be back.
