Welcome to The Rutland Arms Inn – A little bit of Old England in the heart of Wanganui

Story

Set in a fully refurbished historic building and named after the smallest English County & the regiment stationed in Wanganui in 1845, the Rutland has provided hospitality for Wanganui locals, tourists & business people since it was first erected in 1859.
Today, the Rutland Arms Inn blends the best of an authentic old English style cafe/restaurant, fresh New Zealand cuisine and a tantalising mix of local, imported & specialty beers. Eight beautifully appointed guest suites combine the appearance and charm of yester-year with all the modern conveniences of today.

The Rutland Arms Inn is iconic in Wanganui and has a proud tradition of being a local favourite. Whether you are a guest in our restaurant or hotel, we make it our business to offer you personalised service in a relaxed, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Located on Ridgway Street and with an entrance onto Victoria Avenue, The Rutland Arms Inn is the only hotel/restaurant in Wanganui that is at the very heart of the cities shopping, dining & entertainment centre – the perfect base from which the lose yourself within this beautiful city.

Pork ribs were good and portion size is large. Plenty of fries, with maybe too many hot chips. But otherwise a nice dinner out. Would go again Service: 4/5
Great location. Friendly staff. Building part of Whanganui Heritage. Good meals, Restaurant very popular with locals. Rooms are not on ground floor, but one floor above and require walking up stairs. I managed but it was a bit challenging with heavy bags. . Rooms have older style high ceilings. Free parking. Would be very happy to stay again. Rooms: Mine was very spacious. High ceilings so may need lots heating in winter, Nearby activities: Didn't explore myself, but very central to City locations such as Art Gallery and Gardens Safety: I felt safe in Whanganui. Has lots of gardens. Walkability: Central area is flat and walkable. But hills on either side. Food & drinks: Tasty meals prepared on premises. Restaurant very busy with locals.
I was only there briefly for business, but the Rutland Arms was quiet, comfortable and ideally located for my work trip. Good secure parking off the street as well. The meal I had downstairs in the restaurant was worth the stay alone!
We stayed one night at the Rutland Arms and had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. The staff were excellent. The beer was fantastic and the food was great. Absolutely recommend the bar and restaurant. The room was good if a little worn. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean and tidy. The shower was disappointing, reminding me of older hotels in England. Very low water pressure - but it was hot and clean.
4 of us went in for dinner on Tuesday 11/4. Not overly busy and we all had a superb meal steak, lamb rump and 2x fish & chips. Our server was top notch, friendly & chatty. She advised us of a 30 min wait on mains, so we got some garlic bread. Good wine selection and Guinness on tap. Food & drinks: Good selection on the menu and not skimpy on the portion sizes either
Very Clean large comfy rooms with wonderful linen. 5 star. The best coffee downstairs - the main reason I am a repeat customer. Attentive staff, who make suggestions worth listening too, eg large group coming in at 7 so you may want to order before we get really busy. Great meals, book as some times they are fully booked. Dinner, breakfast- they even make the butter spreadable not hard slabs, morning tea, lunch and dinner. People we take to dine with here are also very happy. Never fails to satisfy. Walkability: On the corner of the main shopping street not far down to the River and the Saturday markets Food & drinks: Coffee is simply the best!
Easily seated around 6pm on a holiday week. Nice interior and live music out back. Drinks came quickly and friendly staff. The seafood chowder was so-so. Two pieces of fish and a few small pieces of mussels or something but otherwise mostly just soup. Bread was fresh and crispy. My partner had a burger and it came with lots of fries, cooked decently but nothing special. Would go back and try other items probably as it’s a fun atmosphere.
Mediocre and overpriced food. Burger was tasteless and extremely fatty. Chips less than average. Over an hours wait for a burger. Overall, very poor value. Avoid.Service: 5/5
Exceptional. We stayed and dined in the restaurant. The check in staff to waitress was excellent. So we are going back in a weeks time. This is the place to go for good food value for money.Rooms: 5/5
I have not rated the rooms as my group only dined in the bar restaurant. So based on the meal and bar service I thoroughly recommend the Rutland. Great meals, taste and volume,.did not walk away hungry. The staff at the bar and attending to the tables were really lovely, made for a great experience. It was a busy time with the Whanganui having it vintage weekend and even so, the staff served everyone well.
