Sugar at Chelsea Bay

Sugar is exactly the correct name for the cafe at the working Chelsea Sugar Factory. Their sweet cakes and pastries are wonderful. The award winning raspberry lamington is huge and the sponge cake is the freshest I have ever had.nWe went for lunch and there is a good menu from Green Eggs and Ham to a Steak Sandwich. The food was very fresh and tasty. Our party enjoyed the food very much. The flat white coffees were disappointing though, a bit cold and weak, just missing real coffee experience.nLovely inside and outside seating is available. They serve you at the tables.nAfter there is the interactive display on sugar production and baking.nThe park area and the views back to the harbor bridge and central Auckland are very good. It is work the longish drive to get there.

When I try to book a table online simply for brunch, I've been unable to for a while. But reading the small print, weekdays during winter is just walk in. Finally went to visit and highly recommend. Beautiful outdoor play area for kids, great views. My group was welcomed on arrival, various staff members all polite and great service. Thoroughly enjoyed the kaimoana chowder, good portion sizes to satisfy. Finished with a decorative hot chocolate and lamington, recommend half cake with another or takeaway box to enjoy any leftovers at home

We enjoyed our visit to this café. A really nice setting. We shared a chocolate and a strawberry lamington—both were delicious. The coffee was excellent too, arriving nice and hot, just as it should be.nnThe staff member who served us was friendly and efficient. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars is that after being invited to take a seat, we waited quite a while before someone came to take our order. It also seemed there was more focus on clearing tables than checking on customers who were waiting to be served.nnThe prices were a little on the high side, but the quality of the food and coffee was very good.

Overall - a pretty good experience for me here.nnWe went for the Mothers Day special. Service was a little patchy, but it was an exceptional occasion.nnI had the Pork Belly Bene which was very good.nnOf course the sweet treats are all good, I had the apple crumble cheesecake which was as good as it sounds.nn4.5/5

This is our first visit to Sugar at Chelsea Bay. We have fallen in love with this romantic cafe.nnHaving given my husband a lovely surprise for pre-Valentine’s Celebration on 12/2/2026, he is over the moon about this beautiful, tranquil and relaxing cafe located at Birkenhead.nnAlthough it is quite a drive from North Shores, it does worth a visit.nnThe cafe is well designed and tables are well set. We choose to sit near the bay so that we can enjoy the wonderful sea view in the morning.nnLamington cake is the best, according to my husband. Coffee is fantastic and the manager is also a very switched on guy.nnWe intend to have our wedding anniversary there some time next year and hope that our plan can work out smoothly and successfully.
