Second Beach is one of Dunedin’s most underrated coastal gems—a small, secluded cove tucked away just a short walk from the popular St Clair Esplanade. Despite its proximity to one of the city’s busiest beachfronts, Second Beach offers a sense of calm and privacy that makes it feel like a completely different world. It’s the perfect spot for anyone seeking a quieter, more intimate slice of the coastline.nnThe beach is known for its rocky shoreline, natural saltwater swimming pool, and impressive cliff faces that create a dramatic yet peaceful atmosphere. While it’s not a traditional sandy beach, its rugged character gives it a unique charm. The gentle sound of waves washing over stones, combined with the calls of seabirds nesting nearby, creates a soothing environment ideal for unwinding or exploring at a leisurely pace.nnOne of the best features of Second Beach is the walking track that leads you there. It winds along the cliffs with stunning ocean views, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Once you arrive, the natural pool carved into the rocks is a standout—especially at high tide, when it fills with fresh seawater and becomes a serene spot for a dip.nnSecond Beach is also incredibly photogenic. The interplay of rocks, water, and light—especially during sunrise or late afternoon—offers endless opportunities for beautiful shots. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s a spot that invites you to slow down and appreciate the quieter side of Dunedin’s coastline.nnFor peaceful moments, scenic beauty, and a touch of rugged charm, Second Beach is a must-visit.
I love second beach. I come here with my friends occasionally to hang out, or just reminisce on when we used to hang out there.nnThe history behind the place is really cool too.nMe and my boyfriend had our first kiss here, so it's kind of a sentimental place for me. Definitely worth a visit, unforgettable views of st Clair and St Kilda Beach!
Short easy walk to a dead end.nSharp cliff and strong waves, be careful when bringing children or pets.
Very nice spot. Not suitable for swimming cause of the rocks and wildlife Seals & Penguins. Perfect view point even for groups to relax and if you are an adventurer you even can go a bit further to have an astonishing view over the coastline. Definitely worth a visit!
A lot of surfers.nNothing much to do on the beach itself. The beach walk if quite short.nnA lot of small business and cafe in the area hence can be hard to find parking.
