We loved our time at the Rydes Rotorua. We stayed there with our grandson who is 11. We enjoyed the games room and swimming pool, used them every day. The food at the buffet restaurant was great! Thought the price of everything was reasonable to. Very friendly staff we would gladly return.
Helpful staff. Rooms are a good clean tidy modern standard.nThe pool was also warm so went for a swim. A good breakfast included in my price. Views over the steam if you get the correct room.
I paid $360 for what was expected to be a comfortable and relaxing weekend. Unfortunately, the experience was far from what was promised.nnThe air conditioning in the room was broken, making the stay extremely uncomfortable. Instead of being offered an alternative room, we were only provided with electric fans, which did very little to alleviate the heat. When we raised our concerns, your staff informed us that nothing more could be done. Out of desperation, we had to open the window despite the unpleasant sulfur smell, which only added to the discomfort.nnThis was meant to be a relaxing and enjoyable weekend, but instead it became stressful and disappointing. For the amount we paid, we reasonably expected a properly maintained room and a higher level of service.nnI submitted a complaint on their website but did not get a response at all.
Room 201 was an absolute disgrace. We thought we had done all the right research and checked reviews but alas we missed some and what a learning curve.nnHaving stayed here a few years ago when it was run by another operator I thought we would be okay, but how quickly things change. For this to be now run by the Rydges our expectations were high.nnBut the room looked like a case of ‘leaky building syndrome’. It was raining outside, inside was a waterfall, with moss and mould, if we had looked any closer we would have found swamp animals.nnWe asked for a new room, at first offered one down the corridor which we thought would be a bad choice,nnWe were given a room that appeared to have seen a renovation, but might be a good paint job.nnWe’re so shocked at the disgusting room Rydges are charging significant $$’s for we took pics… see what you think, a tent in the bush would be better?nnRydges, you really need to stop making rooms like this available, it’s a brand reputation risk, as well as a heath and safety concern.
I dont want to sound like Alexis from schitts creek here but if we could give 0 stars we would - the other low star reviews are correct.nnOur room was disgusting. As soon as we walked out of the elevator you could smell the damp, coupled with the visual horror of a dilapidating hotel, sorely in need of demolition or a good renovation. The hallway was dirty, all the walls were marked and the door to out room was so grimy around the handles that I didnt even want to open the door to the room.nnOur room itself, 113, smelled of damp and moth balls so badly that it stung our eyes. This was not the smell of Rotorua. It looked like the room in Stephen King's The Shining - no joke, you know that scene in the bathroom where Jack Nicholson makes out with the old zombie ghost women? Look it up on Google and you'll see what I mean. That was the bathroom! - we didn't want to touch anything.nnThe only chance of getting fresh air was a sliding door that was locked due to health hazards. I felt like a canary trapped in cage being sent down a mine. It was very unsettling. Our view was of pooling water from the air con units on the roof above, aiding to the overall damp, manky, depressing feeling.nnThe bathroom had limescale all around and was exceptionally outdated and damaged. It smelled like a drain and the toilet paper was damp.nnDespite this, the staff were helpful and gave us the option to view a new room. Unfortunately the new room was no better and for the additional $50 per night, it was not worth the cost.nnLuckily we ended up finding a lovely airbnb about the same distance from the CBD at a similar cost.nnIt's disgraceful that the hotel still has these rooms available for booking. We've stayed in highway motels better than this.
