We loved this cozy place, great service, fast and clean, bubbly staff and super tasty food. All recommended, great for groups, they will accommodate the portions as needed. 100% recommended! Well be back soon! Thanks team!Food: 5/5
Had dinner here with mum and brother. Food is good and the ambience is very nice. We love the beef short ribs and tuna tataki. We ordered a small plate of sashimi they are nice and fresh. My only comment is we are seated in a small table and the finished plates are pilling up on the side. Would be good if staff were fast enough the clear the empty plates, apart from that everything else was good.
We really enjoyed our first visit to Mr Tanaka’s! Unsure why there are some low rated reviews, as the dishes we tried were phenomenal. The rib eye with nori butter was cooked perfectly to medium rare. We think it’s actually some of the best steak we have ever had. We had both beef and tuna tataki. Both were presented beautifully, and tasted amazing. The ponzu dressings were citric and light. And despite being absolutely full, we still wanted to fit in dessert. Given we are not normally sweet people, the savouriness of the miso caramel complimented the panna cotta wonderfully. It was well worth fitting in! The staff were very lovely. We would definitely recommend coming here - maybe don’t opt for the sushi. It was good but I definitely feel as though their strengths lie with grilled items. Parking: Lots of free parking on adjacent streets Kid-friendliness: Plenty of families were dining at the restaurant.
We had a very enjoyable dinner on a cool Saturday evening. It does get busy after 630pm, and there is a bit of a wait on the meals. Service is pretty good . Karaage chicken was very tasty . Spiced edamame with chilli salt was a nice snack with the warm house saki. The Tuna tataki with miso aioli , tobiko , daikon and edamame was the highlight with amazing flavours .Spicy crab stick sushi was also another highlight. Tempura soft shell crabs were a bit to salty for us but had a lot of flavour with the amazing yum yum sauce. Finished off with a warm chocolate pudding with matcha tea ice cream, not at all sweet . Overall good flavorsome food with a good range of drinks and friendly staff.
A delicious meal from start to finish, had an array of starters and sticks, the beef and mushroom was a highlight, along with the Tanaka tuna salad and Port Ramen. Friendly staff who were attentive and the tunes being played suited the vibe. Recommend.
Overall a great time at Mr Tanakas! Food 5/5 - We tried a bunch of different things, and we liked them all! We had the bacon wrapped prawn sticks, agedashi tofu, chicken karaage, tuna tataki, and the beef short rib. Our favourites were the beef short rib very tender, good presentation and a big portion, followed by the bacon wrapped prawn sticks, and then surprisingly the karaage. Service 4/5 - The food came out very quickly, and the staff were nice and accommodating. Atmosphere 4/5 - We liked the yakitori bar vibe, and there wasn't much noise even though its right on the main street. The table we were sat at felt a tiny bit crowded though and had an awkward cross bar that my legs kept hitting
Great food that is very tasty with a hint of chili with many options to chose from. Friendly staff and prompt service. Highly recommended and will be back again.Food: 5/5
We were looking for a place for dinner and I suggested this place since I was quite excited to try it. We didn't book beforehand but was able to get a table after waiting for a bit. They seemed to be a bit understaffed with only two people out front and the place being fairly full. The menu had quite a few interesting items on it. We grabbed a few things to share. It took a while to get the drinks order in. The karaage chicken wasn't bad but had an almost burnt flavour. The tempura wasn't that good since the batter was too thick. The bacon wrapped prawns and grilled squid were nice. The harumaki rolls were also ok. The first piece of the sticky pork belly was nice with its nice layer of fat. The second piece was quite dry. The chicken was also quite dry which was very disappointing. We ended up not going for dessert since we weren't sure how good it would be. I'm not sure if the huge disappointment was because I was looking forward to the place but everything not panning out like what I expected. Edit: I stuck to the grilled items and desserts and it was nice. A bit pricey but nice food.
Great food. Chill ambience. Great 50% off value from First Table. Friendly service and well worth a visit.
Mr Tanaka’s…a homely solace nestled in the heart of Ellerslie. Seated under the toasty heater, enveloped in warmth, I was transported from Auckland’s bitter winter to the bustling, rich streets of Japan. The meal began with the crunchy goodness of edamame beans. The bean itself was crisp and fresh, delicately dusted in vibrant chilli salt which brought the vital kick to a graceful appetiser. Alongside our edamame, we engorged ourselves in lotus chips. The distinct ‘snap’ of the lotus chip indicated perfection. However, the chip accelerated beyond the realm of perfection upon its pairing with the white bean miso dip. I believe I transcended into heaven. We got stuck into the heart of the dish…harumaki rolls and bao buns. The rich roast duck was brimming with flavour; tender and juicy, contrasted against the earthy flavour of shiitake mushrooms. The dish was packed with taste, the flavour wrapped in the flaky exterior of the rolls. The texture contrast satisfied the senses, as crunchiness complimented tender meat and mushroom. Bao buns. A go-to. However, these were exceptional. The fragile bun enveloped flavour and spices, transporting the eater. Pork belly; falling apart in refined culinary perfection. Cucumber; fresh and crisp. Sweet sticky sauce; a festival on the palate. Coriander; a subtle punch of aromatic greenness, enhancing the meal further. Kewpie mayo; show-stopping. The journey to Japan ended with deep fried mochi balls aka fried happiness. The chewy and sticky interior was hidden under a crisp, golden shield. Vanilla gelato added a cool, creamy texture, amplifying the sweetness of the dish. Tokyo cherries offered a welcoming polarity with a tangy fruitiness. A phenomenal experience, excellent staff, beautiful atmosphere. If you want to do as Shawn Mendes said and “get lost in Japan”...Mr Tanaka’s is the place to be.
