Loved my stay here. Clean facilities & welcoming staff. Bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper as it's central, and you can hear the nearby bars
I recently stayed at Haka Lodge in Auckland and had a very disappointing experience. The hostel is located on a party street, and the noise level was unbearable. The windows are paper thin and offer no noise insulation whatsoever. Being in my room felt like being inside a pub all night long.nnSleep was impossible due to the constant loud noises from outside. To make matters worse, I tried to contact the hostel twice to address this issue but received no response because it was outside their working hours. Even when they resumed work the next morning, they didn't bother to reply to my messages.nnOverall, the lack of sleep and poor customer service made my stay incredibly frustrating. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a restful night's sleep.
Really not incredible.nnThe hostel, and most of the rooms, overlook a street with drunk and drugged people, and some of whom have knives. For example, one night, 2 ground floor windows were broken. Not very reassuring when you wake up.nIn addition to not being comfortable when going out, it is obviously extremely noisy. The single glazing, plus the fact that the windows don't close completely, makes you hear every noises in the street. To top it all off, you have to pay for earplugs. One would have thought that given the geographical circumstances of the hostel they would be made available free of charge, as is frequently offered by most hostels which are in a much quieter area, but no $5NZD.nnThe room we were in was next to a heavy, slamming door. That is to say that every time someone opened it, it made the wall and the windows shake, and made a noise when it closed.nWe were lucky enough to be only 4 in a room with 8 beds for several nights. However, the staff crammed us into two bunk beds, instead of allowing us to take advantage of all the available space in the room.nnWhile cooking, we realized that half of the hotplates don't work, which is quite annoying when meal time approaches and everyone is trying to cook. Added to the fact that the bottoms of the pans are, for the most part, not flat, cooking food, even the most basic ones, can take time.nnThe staff, young and unprofessional, takes up a lot of the common space. During their breaks they sleep on the sofas, which are already not very numerous for the number of customers, while they can go to their room.nDuring their meals, they take up half the table and have loud conversations, as if we were in a bar. We almost felt like we were disturbing them with our presence.nIn addition, their friends/former colleagues enjoy the hostel services excluding rooms without paying.nObviously, it's impossible to talk to a manager about it because we don't know who it is/he may have questionable behavior himself.nnThe bathrooms had a musty smell and no one took care of them the entire time we were there. Not the first time this information has been noted in other reviews. When will there be a solution?nnOh and, we saw a cockroache.nnAt this price, we found hostels in Auckland that were much better maintained, and closer to the center.nnGlad to be gone.
A perfectly good hostel with decent service and friendly staff. However the street outside the hostel has a big problem with anti-social drug users who stand outside the hostel all day and night shouting, swearing, selling and using drugs openly, fighting and generally causing a nuisance. As soon as you step outside the door you are faced with this until you get off K Road. While we stayed there 2 windows in the downstairs were smashed in, it seemed like this was fairly normal. Not a great vibe for our few days in Auckland.
Very convenient location close to town centre. Reasonably priced. Staff are very helpful and friendly and hostel is well-cleaned and taken care of. Beds are comfortable with curtains and a night light for privacy. Most people who stay are fairly chilled, not lots of loud partying late into the night. Only downside is that the bigger dormitories are near to a noisy street, but I wore earplugs and this was fine.
