If you thought Dickson Vinnies prices were audacious, you haven't seen Mitchell Vinnies see pictures and read the end of my review to see some specific prices! Quite a few months ago, I had a friendly conversation with the manager maybe it's changed, but at the time, it was Simeon, who was amiable, but unfortunately, very business-minded. I expressed frustration as a pensioner, now unable to afford the vast majority of items from an op shop. I then asked about the rationale behind pricing Kmart and Big W-branded items greater than their NEW price - and his reply was as follows: "Poorer folk can go shop at Big W or Kmart if they don't want to pay Vinnies prices". This is a really heartbreaking sentiment to hear from Vinnies. The beauty of op shops is that they serve the community in so many wonderful ways: - Raising funds for charity - Providing an opportunity for poor people to have something special; something that they otherwise would not get - Helping declutter - Community outreach with volunteer involvement - Contributing to a circular economy; a huge environmental plus. And it's really for shame that an op shop is encouraging me to go to a fast fashion retailer if I don't want to pay Vinnies' absurd prices. Op shops are the only opportunity that poorer people such as myself have to get something special, and when prices are gatekept at consistently upwards of $60 see my photos, it's just very demoralising. Being forced to shop fast fashion out of necessity is wrong. The manager made the point that "it usually does sell for that price!" This is a business mindset, not a charity mindset. If you get something expensive in, you very-well *should* be selling it for less than it's worth. That's what an op shop is for. There is a balance between acquiring funds for charity programs, and blessing the poorer community with affordable, nice items, which are already second-hand. And Vinnies Mitchell has chosen the side that strips dignity away from those who need it most. I will be donating my goods to Anglicare from now on, and I will be making sure to snip any new tags off of items so op shops don't up the prices for shoppers who don't care about new tags. And now, today's awful finds! 1. Random blue glasses for $25 and $35. 2. Semi-nice zipped-up coat for $80. 3. Typewriter for $110 there was another for $80. 4. Motorcycle jacket for TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS??? There were actually two of them for $250, and a few more for $200. Literally insane. 5. A not-particularly-special coat for $70. 6. A soft toy for $15. This was a recurring theme here - I didn't see a single soft toy for below $3. These aren't upmarket items; they're plushies. Someone who buys a soft toy from an op shop is buying it for their child, and is not about to resell it or anything. Overall, extremely-unimpressed with Mitchell Vinnies, and I pray that a healthy pricing balance is restored. edited for typo
Thought I'd go op shopping today......turns out I'll go op looking. I cannot justify the prices thier charging for rubbish. Toys literally do not work and they had a Fijian drum for $45 with a retail rrp sticker on the bottom that had $65 on it, i dunno who they have working out pricing but they need to go.... I thought the money went to charity, not the staffs pockets.
I visited this store today and a staff member/volunteer was loudly complaining to some customers about the negative reviews the store receives for being overpriced, which put a bad taste in my mouth as most of those reviews are probably from people who are on a pension like myself and are struggling to pay the prices that op shops are charging nowadays. I don't know how to express how rude and loud he was being, with other staff members laughing as if being unable to afford rising costs of living is funny. So here's another bad review i guess, as the majority of the stuff here is indeed very expensive/overpriced. Shopping on facebook marketplace or even ebay or salvos online is often cheaper. They do have some cool things here but it's treated by staff as more of an antique/vintage store than an op shop and the prices reflect that, so keep that in mind if you're considering visiting :
First time i came here was when they had first just opened. The place was very tidy and organised. Now when i go there the place is jam packed with stuff and not so tidy. I guess this isnt the worst thing as the more stuff the more likely it is to find something good. They have cages and cages of stuff donated outside. It would take a large team of people to sort. It would just be good to see the prices a bit cheaper. Even though everything i bought was as new the prices all add up. People coming shopping here are people in need just as much as the people vinnies supports with there programs helping people in need. Just like i can just afford my bills, but i can't afford to buy everything brand new from the shops for my family. Atleast my money is still going to a good place when i come on rare occasions!!!
This is definitely the best op shop i go to for jeans & jackets. I literally always find amazing pieces here. Highly recommend for that, and the staff are always lovely. I do definitely agree with other reviews regarding prcing -- things are a little more expensive than desirable, but no worse than any other Vinnies.
Sadly what was once a delightful and affordable Op Shop is now really a delightful but expensive Vintage shop. The layout is lovely but unfortunately the prices are now beyond the reach of people who need to shop at op shops the most. Op shops are a service in their own right. They really shouldn't be used just for the money they bring in for other services, no matter how worthy those other services might be. Do hope that Vinnies remembers this.
This store is beautifully presented and eye catching however make sure you're there on payday as the pricing is ridiculous. This op shop has got to be the dearest in Canberra. Multiple items in the range of $70-$200 and many of these have stickers with RRP far below what the asking price is. Children's clothing priced at the same as is being asked at the brand's store. I'm curious to know how the end figure is decided and how often it ends up being reduced? Gone are the days of 'opportunity' shopping here.
I love coming here to have a look. I can sometimes find some really nice pieces for a great price. Other things are a bit overpriced for an op shop. Staff are always really friendly though! But they only have one register so can be slow at times.
Friendly staff, found an awesome skirt for cheap! Happy with the purchase:
New location, nice new store, but still issues. 1. Only one POS, so not very fast or efficient process for paying for your items. 2. Parking can be an issue. No dedicated parking area, just street parking and it can and does get busy. 3. Pricing - just ridiculous. And completely unrealistic. Vinnies, you get everything donated for FREE. So why do you charge so much? Some examples I've seen - i just because records are making a comeback doesn't mean you can slap a $10 price tag on every record. Good grief - the dross you have should have 50c or $1 price tags: ii when you're selling a second hand board game for more than I can buy it new at Capital Games, we have a problem. $150 for an item that sells new for $85!! Who is making up these prices? iii Pricing blu-rays are $3+....has anyone told you that price of blu-rays have come down significantly over the past few years? iv clothing prices are all over the shop - again, you get it all for free...so why have items at $10 and $12 dollars? or a pair of shorts for $8? I just don't understand why so many Op Shops in the ACT have really boosted their prices in the last couple of years!!
