Toowoomba Hospital

Story

Toowoomba Hospital is a heritage-listed hospital at Pechey Street, Toowoomba, Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to. It is also known as Toowoomba Base Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 July 2000.HistoryThe Toowoomba General Hospital was established on its present James Street site in 1880 as the third site of a public hospital in the city and its second permanent home. The Hospital has been altered since its establishment with major phases of development in the 1890s-1910s; 1950s-1960s and more recently in the late 1990s. Two buildings remain extant from the 19th century and several remain from the early part of this century. It is these earlier buildings that comprise the focus of this report.Early public hospitals were established for the provision of health care services for those people who could not afford private medical attention in their homes or in private institutions. Nineteenth-century Queensland hospitals were established by local voluntary hospital committees, which usually experienced some difficulty raising funds for both the establishment and running of the hospitals. Government grants were commonly available for the construction of hospital buildings. It was not until the Hospitals Act of 1923 that hospitals and public health became basic responsibilities of the government, resulting in the creation of hospital boards throughout the state who assumed control of local hospitals. Toowoomba Hospital was established during the voluntary committee period and was taken over by the Hospital Board following the introduction of the 1923 Act. From that time, development of the site was largely controlled by the Board.

Disappointing Antenatal Care at Toowoomba HospitalnnI recently had my first antenatal appointment at Toowoomba Hospital after moving from Brisbane, and my experience was unfortunately disappointing. The midwife, whose name I unfortunately do not recall, quickly went through a few details without providing thorough explanations. For example, when she asked me to provide a urine sample, she didn’t explain how to do it correctly, which led to my sample being contaminated. This resulted in unnecessary stress and an avoidable hospital visit as she said you urine have some proteins. When a student volunteer checked my blood pressure, it initially showed as elevated and they sent to me for hospital visit, when I requested it be checked on the other arm during my hospital visit, it was completely normal. The doctor at the hospital later explained that I might have taken the wrong sample, which made my urine sample contaminated and contributed to an unnecessary and stressful visit and then he explained me how should I do it and then given another sample it came normal as well.nnIn contrast, during my previous visits in Brisbane, the midwife would communicate directly with the doctor through video calls or other means as part of the antenatal visit. This approach effectively avoided unnecessary visits and additional costs. I believe this method could have been equally effective here at Toowoomba Hospital, preventing the additional costs and stress associated with my extra hospital visit.nnOverall, I felt the level of care I received was far below what I experienced at Brisbane Hospital, where the midwives were thorough and communicative. This visit felt rushed and superficial, and I left feeling that my concerns were not adequately addressed and without midwives checking me properly at the antenatal clinic, there sending to hospital was unnecessary as everything was completely fine in the hospital. The only positive aspect of the visit was the friendliness of the doctor at the hospital, who took the time to explain what might have happened. Olivia, a midwife at the hospital, was also professional and made a positive impression.nnIn contrast, the antenatal appointment midwife who attended me at 3 PM seemed to have less knowledge and appeared to prioritize sending patients to the hospital over providing thorough explanations. I would definitely prefer to have Olivia for any future appointments but I know she works in hospitals not at antenatal clinc but still want someone professional at my next visits and hope to avoid the midwife who seemed rushed and unprofessional and seen me at 3pmnnI strongly believe that this matter needs to be looked into, as expectant mothers deserve better care and attention. I hope the hospital will take steps to ensure that future patients receive the thorough and supportive care they need during such an important time.
I cannot praise the staff enough, coming in via ambulance I was looked at straight away and the had all scans/ultrasounds done very quickly. I was moved to multiple areas before my surgery and all of the Doctors and nurses were excellent. They all explained what was happening and provided pain relief in a timely manner. Praise where praise is due.
I’d give 50 stars if I could. I was so kindly cared for when the staff had had a long extra busy day. I’m so grateful for care and free care and caring care!!! Thank you to the emergency nurses and other staff
This hospital is THE reason to get private health cover.nnVarious levels of incompetence, arrogance and dismissiveness, across multiple departments and over an extended time period.nnEmergency staff that make broad assessments without any testing or expertise. Neurologists that diagnose without bothering to assess evidence. Cardiologists that demonstrate arrogance beyond comprehension and wave off customer input.nnOf course, this is based off personal experience, so yours may be better. Best of luck.
GREAT EXPERIENCE!nJess and Issy made me feel comfortable going towards TBH, they were very attentive.nBernie and David were great, made me feel very relaxed despite why I was in the hospital.nAmelia was so lovely, I felt very reassured and it was like talking to a friend.nOverall, it was a good experience!
