Toowoomba Hospital

Story

Toowoomba Hospital is a heritage-listed hospital at Pechey Street, Toowoomba, Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to. It is also known as Toowoomba Base Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 July 2000.HistoryThe Toowoomba General Hospital was established on its present James Street site in 1880 as the third site of a public hospital in the city and its second permanent home. The Hospital has been altered since its establishment with major phases of development in the 1890s-1910s; 1950s-1960s and more recently in the late 1990s. Two buildings remain extant from the 19th century and several remain from the early part of this century. It is these earlier buildings that comprise the focus of this report.Early public hospitals were established for the provision of health care services for those people who could not afford private medical attention in their homes or in private institutions. Nineteenth-century Queensland hospitals were established by local voluntary hospital committees, which usually experienced some difficulty raising funds for both the establishment and running of the hospitals. Government grants were commonly available for the construction of hospital buildings. It was not until the Hospitals Act of 1923 that hospitals and public health became basic responsibilities of the government, resulting in the creation of hospital boards throughout the state who assumed control of local hospitals. Toowoomba Hospital was established during the voluntary committee period and was taken over by the Hospital Board following the introduction of the 1923 Act. From that time, development of the site was largely controlled by the Board.

Up until recently this would have been a 5 star review. My family has always had good experiences with the base.nHowever, in August my elderly father was admitted with sepsis, along with a few other issues. His care was complicated and in the end his issues were too great and the family were called in for his final hours. They had made him comfortable and we were told we could stay with him as long as we liked. Even the gentleman who shared his room, left so we could have some privacy. We were still waiting for some family to arrive when he passed peacefully....only to be asked by a staff member, rather rudely, if we were finished as they needed the bed! The lack of compassion was shocking and upsetting.
Horrible emergency department. They will leave you waiting on a very hard seat with serious hip pain sustained from an assault by a 170kg man - I’m 62kgs. I had cardiac symptoms as well and had been having random episodes where my HR would shoot up to 280+bpm, with chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness. All signs to be seen prior to 7 hrs. Then the triage nurse or nurse in charge gave me major unnecessary attitude when I told her I had to leave because I was so uncomfortable, as if I was impatient for waiting 7hrs LIKE THAT? Without one complaint. Wouldn’t even let me have my own pain relief that my GP gave me. At least then I would have waited in comfort and maybe lasted longer. Now I have nowhere to go to have this examined and scanned, as they’re the only public hospital in the area… I haven’t slept for 4 days straight and every other time I’ve slept prior to those 4 days was only 1-2hrs every second or third night, it hurts that much. Now I have no documentation for my injuries from the assault for court on Wednesday, as the police have issued a protection order on my behalf and I needed all of this diagnosed and documented. Along with the scratches and major bruising all over my body. Sorry, but 7 hours was my limit, I had to get home by uber, to take medicine so I could finally feel some relief and comfort. This ED should be ashamed of themselves. If it was you in this situation or a family member, you’d get the care you needed asap. You just treat the general public like crap because you have difficult patients at times that ruin it for the rest of us. I never once saw a Dr or anyone - only this triage nurse that took my BP once the entire time, right at the start of my 7hr wait. Nothing else happened. I have POTS along with other cardiac issues/ arrhythmias/ valve issue.. and had not eaten any solids and only minimal fluids in roughly 12 days because of the assault anyone with POTS knows exactly how dangerous an electrolyte imbalance with this condition can be and clearly I’ve explained above that I was having serious cardiac symptoms already and she said “you never told me that”.nUm, I’m sorry… is the patient the one that is supposed to give you the handover? No, the ambulance officer already did. If I had of seen a doctor at SOME STAGE then I would have told them the full story and history and I would have been in a bed very quickly. They left me in a family room out the back somewhere and just forgot about me for 7 hours! No heart, no empathy, you all should have NEVER chosen this profession because you’re AWFUL at it. Even after I had explained some of the story, they still left me in that random room by myself on a hard chair that only made the hip feel worse and worse as the hrs went by. Now I am out of options as urgent care can only do X-rays and that’s not the scan I need. I also needed blood tests, fluids and an ECG at the very least!! Which nurses can do on their own. If they had enough time to sit around and gossip about their private life, then they had time to do this at the bare minimum. A Dr could have ordered a hip scan between patients, and then everything would have been done by the time the Dr was finally available. There’s always a way to do things but they made zero effort. Oh and the ambulance officers stand around talking about what nurse they’re going to “try out” next… I heard this with in the first 5 mins of getting there whilst I was giving admin my details. So thanks for nothing and now leaving me in excruciating pain with nowhere to go for help because I wouldn’t even trust you with a birds life, let alone mine now. Again, I’ve now slept for 2 hours tonight and my hip has woken me up now at 1am. With no where to go and no one to trust to help me. I was a cardiac/neuro nurse for 11 years so I’m not just complaining for no reason, I’m complaining because I KNOW this was wrong!! The hospital I used to work at would NEVER have done this to any patient, let alone someone who was badly assaulted and trying to seek help, diagnosis and treatment. Disgusting.
Toowoomba Base Hospital OncologynnThankyou to the staff from the bottom of my heart. My mum was in hospital for 11 days until she passed. I must say from the Doctors, nurses, wardies, kitchen staff and cleaners. Everyone was so helpful and respectful of my mum, and family members continuously coming in and out.nThe Oncology nursing staff I could not fault the whole time. They made sure mum was well looked after and comfortable in her final moments. They were very caring and considerate with all family members.nAgain thankyou all from the bottom of my heart, keep being amazing.
Hi would just like to leave a genuine review of my recent treatment for RSV and bacterial Pneumonia. The two beautiful young female Doctors particularly Dr Emily was so very clearly. Informative and reassuring at each stage of the process - amazingly so. I have been in hospital periodically during my life . But this was the best ever hands down. So good on Toowoomba General for engaging amazing medical staff. Best regards Gordon Dyball..
Despite the very hectic and busy emergency department, when I got through the nurses and doctor were very thorough and understanding of my condition. There were some delays with things at times but given how busy it was the service was exceptional and the treatment already has me feeling a bit better. Currently in the hospital bed right now and it is fairly comfy. Very friendly staff who explained everything and helped a bunch. Thank you to all the nurses who helped me tonight even though it was so busy I really appreciate it
