Toowoomba Hospital

Story

Toowoomba Hospital is a heritage-listed hospital at Pechey Street, Toowoomba, Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to. It is also known as Toowoomba Base Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 July 2000.HistoryThe Toowoomba General Hospital was established on its present James Street site in 1880 as the third site of a public hospital in the city and its second permanent home. The Hospital has been altered since its establishment with major phases of development in the 1890s-1910s; 1950s-1960s and more recently in the late 1990s. Two buildings remain extant from the 19th century and several remain from the early part of this century. It is these earlier buildings that comprise the focus of this report.Early public hospitals were established for the provision of health care services for those people who could not afford private medical attention in their homes or in private institutions. Nineteenth-century Queensland hospitals were established by local voluntary hospital committees, which usually experienced some difficulty raising funds for both the establishment and running of the hospitals. Government grants were commonly available for the construction of hospital buildings. It was not until the Hospitals Act of 1923 that hospitals and public health became basic responsibilities of the government, resulting in the creation of hospital boards throughout the state who assumed control of local hospitals. Toowoomba Hospital was established during the voluntary committee period and was taken over by the Hospital Board following the introduction of the 1923 Act. From that time, development of the site was largely controlled by the Board.

Maternity ward were fantastic in helping my wife deliver our daughter . The midwifes were great always calm and reasurring through out. Only issue we had was how long it took to clean theater so wife had to wait in pain and worry but ended up for the best as she gave birth natural rather than c-section.

On Saturday 24th March I visited Base Emergency Department. From Melanie on Triage to Russ(nurse) and Todd Doctor in Fast Track I can only say thankyou. You did everything you could to make me feel comfortable and I cannot thank you enough.

I have been to the emergency department a few times over the years, and found the medical staff to be fine until I have to answer the questions about my adverse reactions to medications... at which point their attitude suddenly changes to something really nasty, and they no longer want to help me at all. Every time this happened I was horrified, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why people who had just been friendly, empathetic and professional a moment ago, would turn into the opposite over something that I couldn't help. It was only recently, while I was discussing the issue with one of the nurses I knew socially, that I finally clicked that the staff thought I was a drug abuser feigning pain symptoms, and wasting emergency department time, just for the sake of prescription shopping for the drugs I want. NOT the case! That has NEVER been the case! And my adverse reactions to Ibuprofen and Codeine are KNOWN reactions, not unheard of ones... if the medical staff at the hospital are completely unfamiliar with them, then I suggest retraining asap. Perhaps they should have been the ones to click when they asked me in a passive aggressive tone "Well then what do YOU want me to prescribe?" and I couldn't answer due to my limited knowledge on the subject. I found myself having to explain that this isn't my field of expertise, and I was hoping they might know the right thing to do. I wish I had realised at the time what they were getting at... I would have defended myself instead of walking out confused, a little afraid of the medical community, and reluctant to seek medical help for anything in the future. I hate to think what they wrote in my medical file as a result of this.

My 9month old daughter was admitted into this hospital after having a fall at home. Both the nurses and doctors were marvellous! Extremely efficient and child friendly! In the past we have always gone private for hospital treatment, however the service here was impeccable!

I bring my son up to oncology every 6 months and the only complaints we have are that you cant park near oncology so have to make the long trek from the parking lot up hallways, in elevators and more hallways. once we could use the trolley thing but other times we couldnt even get a wheelchair. as he has spinal problems its very difficult. the other complaint is the waiting times. even the new number system is really slow. I dont know why it takes so long once you get there and give them your name.
