Toowoomba Hospital

Story

Toowoomba Hospital is a heritage-listed hospital at Pechey Street, Toowoomba, Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to. It is also known as Toowoomba Base Hospital. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 July 2000.HistoryThe Toowoomba General Hospital was established on its present James Street site in 1880 as the third site of a public hospital in the city and its second permanent home. The Hospital has been altered since its establishment with major phases of development in the 1890s-1910s; 1950s-1960s and more recently in the late 1990s. Two buildings remain extant from the 19th century and several remain from the early part of this century. It is these earlier buildings that comprise the focus of this report.Early public hospitals were established for the provision of health care services for those people who could not afford private medical attention in their homes or in private institutions. Nineteenth-century Queensland hospitals were established by local voluntary hospital committees, which usually experienced some difficulty raising funds for both the establishment and running of the hospitals. Government grants were commonly available for the construction of hospital buildings. It was not until the Hospitals Act of 1923 that hospitals and public health became basic responsibilities of the government, resulting in the creation of hospital boards throughout the state who assumed control of local hospitals. Toowoomba Hospital was established during the voluntary committee period and was taken over by the Hospital Board following the introduction of the 1923 Act. From that time, development of the site was largely controlled by the Board.

My son arrived in an ambulance following an accident. The staff in the Emergency Department were fantastic. We had a nurse in the trauma bay who stayed with us, explained everything and kept on top of his pain relief and oxygen needs. Skye was very experienced, had a warm friendly manner and advocated for our son with the medical staff. We appreciated the high level of care and attention given.nThank you Toowoomba Hospital for a caring and professional experience. Much appreciated.
AI must express my gratitude for the exceptional care and attention provided by the doctors and staff during my wife's delivery. The nurses in the maternity ward were especially kind and attentive. Thank you very much.
My daughter who has a 10 week old baby was transferred from Wck hospital to get urgent care nill by mouth as suspected surgery that day all organised by WBH and on arrival was taken for a blood test and then left sitting for hrs in A&EnWhilst my daughter had private hospital cover was put in a ward with men / women and 1 toilet and shower to share between 6 others and told she may not see. Dr for 12 hours ?? As she was a public pt!! Thankfully signed herself out and proceeded to St Vincent’s hospital who thankfully did their job nTBH !! ASK SOME QUESTIONS!!/ PICK UP THE PHONE AND ASK THE REFERRING HOSPITAL WHY SHE IS THERE !! DO NOT TELL PT SHE HAS SIGNED TO GO PUBLIC BUT TOOK HER PRIVATE HEALTH FUNDING ANYWAY UNLESS YOU CAN GIVE BETTER CARE !! we understand you are busy and we understand you are understaffed but please PICK UP A PHONE AND RING THE REFERRING HOSPITAL as this was a major issue that had a new mum and 10 week old baby separated longer than necessary
My experience was horrific. ,3 fractured vertebrae and I was given a toilet 1.1!2. High, no walker, no toilet chair. One Dr tried 8 times to insert cannula, finally putting one in , which leaked after 2 daysnnI was not washed or had linen changed for 7 days etc etc and I would like compensation and are chances to teach NURSING and it's true meaning to graduates. O could go on but who listens
Would like to commend the staff on the surgical ward and Emergency department.i came in saturday in agonising pain with a hernia. Was seen to quickly and with so much empathy. Was transferred to the surgery department for a hernia repair surgery, the staff in that department are also second to none. Absolutely amazing Toowoomba hospital.thank you again to the doctors and nurses working saturday afternoon and Sunday
