There's nothing to fault on my recent visit there when I brought an overseas visitors for dinner. The service was prompt, polite and helpful.nnWe ordered the shared platter, lamb ragu gnocchi, braised beef cheeks and 850g Cape Grim Rib Eye medium rare to share between four people. Everything was superbly done, and generous portions. Even the side dishes and warm crusty bread were fantastic.nnThe restaurant is well known for their chargrilled steaks and the reputation is rightly deserved. Prices commiserate with the quality of food, so I'd definitely recommend for special occasions or if you are craving for some great Aussie steaks!
As self-proclaimed steak enthusiasts, we were drawn to Railway Club Hotel by its glowing reputation and claim as Melbourne’s Original Steak Hotel. We had high hopes for an exceptional dining experience, particularly with the intriguing MB7-9+ Wagyu Rump on the menu. Unfortunately, our visit fell short of expectations, revealing significant room for improvement in both service and food quality.nnUpon arrival on a Thursday evening, we were promptly seated at a lovely table by the window. However, the initial positive impression quickly diminished as we experienced a frustrating 15-20 minute wait before anyone approached us to take our drink order. This delay was particularly perplexing, given that adjacent tables were being attended to promptly. When our order was finally taken, we opted for the charcuterie platter to start, eager to indulge.nnAt $44, we anticipated a carefully curated selection of freshly sliced cold cuts. Instead, the platter felt disappointingly lacklustre; cold cuts that appeared pre-packaged, presented with a drizzling of olive oil. While the arrangement was neat, it lacked authenticity and left us feeling that we had overpaid for what amounted to a supermarket offering. For this dish, a rating of 2/5 is warranted.nnFor our main course, we chose to share the Robbins Island Rump, cooked medium, alongside hand-cut chips and a Rocket and Pear salad. Here, the steak presented several issues that cannot be overlooked. The marbling, which should be a highlight, was underwhelming and did not reflect the advertised MB7-9+ quality. The cooking was inconsistent, with some sections barely reaching medium rare while others strayed into rare territory. The slicing of the steak varied dramatically with some pieces thin and others thick, resulting in a chewy texture for the thicker cuts, especially given the uneven doneness. Additionally, the steak lacked adequate caramelization and seasoning, both critical elements.nnWe considered sending the steak back but ultimately decided against it, choosing instead to reflect on our experience afterwards to weigh it up after giving it some thought. After thorough evaluation, we concluded that the dish failed to meet the standards we have come to expect from high-quality steaks, particularly in terms of flavour and texture. The accompanying salad, however, was a bright spot, fresh and enjoyable.nnIn summary, Railway Club Hotel has a commendable reputation, but our experience suggests that there are significant areas needing improvement, particularly in service attentiveness and the quality of the food served. For a venue that touts its steak expertise, the shortcomings we encountered are hard to overlook.
Railway Club Hotel in Port Melbourne has served up Australia's best pub steak! No contest.nnThis unassuming corner pub in the back streets of Port Melbourne has a menu that is quite simply sensational! So many different cuts and weights of steak. We chose the 600g T Bone, which was cooked to absolute medium rare perfection and served with thick hand cut chips. A perfect sized steak for two people. We added mash potato and cauliflower cheese to our order too. Both were gorgeous, however it was the steak left us almost speechless!nnWe paired the steak with a 2022 Yarra Yering Light Dry Red, which was phenomenal. It's rare, if ever you'll see a pub with a wine list this extensive - Australian and foreign wines aplenty, and a huge by-the-glass selection too. It really is something to behold, as was the whole experience. You know a restaurant is serious about its steak when they have the cuts on display in a fridge for all to see. Don't be put off by the front bar and the absurd amount of TVs showing horse or harness racing and nothing else by the way - once you step through the door into the dining room, it feels like a completely different pub. The Railway Club Hotel easily, easily, holds the title for best pub steak in Australia. Steak 9.5/10, pub experience 8/10 only marked down because of the intrusive amount of TV's in the from bar. An absolute triumph
Food was amazing. The atmosphere was very friendly with a cool vibe. The steaks we ordered were served in 25 minutes which was less than we anticipated. From the reviews we were prepared to wait at least 30+ minutes. The chips were damn good and the sauces were balanced as well. I highly recommend this place.
We had lunch here recently and we came away very impressed. This place is delivers high quality restaurant food and table service in a pub setting. All the food was exceptional in quality and taste, in particular the steak was some of the very best I have had in Melbourne. The staff are also friendly and are knowledgeable about the steak choices. Book in advance, as this place is deservedly busy.
