I visited The National Theatre St Kilda in November 2023 for a Candlelight string quartet performance celebrating the music of Hans Zimmer. The theatre is impossible to miss, sitting on the corner in one of St Kilda’s most recognisable heritage buildings. The exterior has retained so much of its original character, and stepping inside feels like travelling back to another era. The grand staircases, ornate details and beautiful architecture make the building just as impressive as the performances it hosts. It’s an easy venue to get to whether you’re driving or using public transport. There is street parking around the surrounding roads, and there’s also a park behind the theatre with a playground if you’re spending some extra time in the area. Trams stop nearby along the main road, and it’s only a short walk from the St Kilda foreshore and restaurants.nnInside, the foyer is spacious with several entrances leading into the auditorium. We were seated towards the back of the theatre, so we headed upstairs via the grand staircase where the ushers helped everyone find their seats. The staff were welcoming and organised, making it easy for the large crowd to settle in before the performance began. The theatre was nearly full for the evening, and the atmosphere suited the performance perfectly. Photography and filming weren’t permitted until the final song, which made sense given the intimate nature of the concert. The Candlelight series transforms the stage with hundreds of LED candles, creating a beautiful setting that complements the music wonderfully.nnThe performance itself was fantastic. The quartet played a selection of Hans Zimmer’s most iconic film scores, including music from Interstellar and Pirates of the Caribbean, and every piece sounded incredible in the theatre. The acoustics were excellent, allowing every instrument to shine, and the audience was completely absorbed from start to finish. The theatre also has accessible seating and facilities, along with public toilets, and regularly hosts productions by local theatre companies as well as touring performances. I really appreciate that it continues to support Melbourne’s performing arts community while preserving such a beautiful historic venue.nnI had a wonderful evening at The National Theatre and would happily return for another concert or stage production. It’s a beautiful piece of Melbourne’s history, and seeing a live performance there makes the experience even more special.
A classic theatre that still operates in St Kilda. Being a classic style theatre, it lacks modern day luxuries however it more than makes up in charm and intimacy in a smaller scale setting. On this occasion, I watch Tarzan The Musical
Lovely Theatre. Loads of atmosphere. Seating is good for views of the stage , however the seats themselves aren't very wide. You can feel the person next to you and hence it can get a little stuffy.nGreat food and drink options which I thought were reasonably priced for a Theatre.nLots of stairs though, so not ideal if you have problems with your knees.
Old, but lovely theatre. Seating arrangements made for unimpeded views from all seats. Sound quality was every good
Love this thearter. It hosts such great shows. Great atmosphere and carries great sound. My kids are in aww seeing a 100 year old building with its cascading staircase. Its perfectly situated near Acland Street to dine before the show and transport is just outside for easy access. There's a park next door for the kids the play at beak time.
