Story

The Criterion Hotel is an iconic symbol in the history of Hotels in Australia. Its famous cousin the 'Breaky Creek' Brisbane was built in the same year 1889 with very similar architecture, the Criterion having one extra floor. Following the Canoona gold rush of the 1850's the embryo of the Criterion Hotel, Palmers store was situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River opposite the present Criterion.

1856 saw the construction of the Bush Inn 'where The Criterion now stands' by Robert Parker of Gayndah. The eldest daughter of Parker, Dorinda Anne married George Silus Curtis a promising real estate agent, auctioneer and aspiring politician. Dorinda Anne was inspired to erect a 'public house of splendor and class' and after several journeys overseas The Criterion Hotel was constructed in 1889, the tender price reading 'just a little over ten thousand pounds'.

Since construction in 1889 'The Cri' has been a family operation, originally the Parker-Curtis families, The Smith family 1922 to 1982, Balkin, Gill, Tourish and from 1991 the Turnbull family. The Turnbull family are proud to have been owners since 1991 and are continually seeking new avenues to ensure the longevity of this Australian Icon. Four generations of the Turnbull family currently reside at 'The Cri'.

NOT A GREAT REVIEW. Tables sticky. Easy to read menus and good prices. Good variety but don’t expect to get what you order. You have to ask for gravy. If you ask for salad with you fish meal, don’t expect it. Then when you ask the waiter where your salad is, he goes away and rudely comes back with a docket and says rudely, you didn’t order it. Wow. A simple, i will get you a bowl. Didn’t care much for him. They bring out meals oddly. Wife gets meal and husband gets his 15 minutes later. Then on came the crappy loud music. The iPhone wouldn’t sync properly all night and music dropping in and out. They were playing stupid bingo with music. Couldn’t have a decent conversation without having to yell. Not a great atmosphere. Meals were tasty and bar staff friendly. Wouldn’t go back. Cheers big ears
This is beautiful pub that caught us by surprise with its incredible 'grand' interior, from the entrance to the 3rd floor. Our room was older, as expected, but was spacious and clean, and better than many we've experienced from other pubs.
Lovely historic pub we came across on a day trip to Rockhampton deciding to have lunch here because it is dog friendly with a well priced menu with good reviews. We both had the Goat Cheese, macadamia and fig salad with added grilled chicken $25. It was absolutely lovely we even had enough chicken for the pups so they were also delighted. Really friendly service with view of river - relaxing and welcoming.
Very vivid and live bands are awesome! The food is great! One of the best places to experience country music, lovely locals, and Queenslander atmosphere. I highly recommend whenever you stop at the Rockhampton area. They have some fantastic games as well.
On arrival, we were greeted with Donna at reception. She promptly checked us in and explained all we needed to know.nThe rooms were clean and comfortable with fridge, microwave, spa bath, shower, AC, outside deck, large TV with multiple options to view whatever you fancy. A colleague and I spent a few hours downstairs at The Bush Inn Bar & Grill Steak House for a few bears before having dinner. The atmosphere, service, and experience were impressive. Overall, our stay at the Criterion Hotel Motel was an excellent choice. Highly recommend this for business, couples, or those who want to explore the Rocky region. We only stayed the one night. However, it would be easy to stay several.
