Story

The Criterion Hotel is an iconic symbol in the history of Hotels in Australia. Its famous cousin the 'Breaky Creek' Brisbane was built in the same year 1889 with very similar architecture, the Criterion having one extra floor. Following the Canoona gold rush of the 1850's the embryo of the Criterion Hotel, Palmers store was situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River opposite the present Criterion.

1856 saw the construction of the Bush Inn 'where The Criterion now stands' by Robert Parker of Gayndah. The eldest daughter of Parker, Dorinda Anne married George Silus Curtis a promising real estate agent, auctioneer and aspiring politician. Dorinda Anne was inspired to erect a 'public house of splendor and class' and after several journeys overseas The Criterion Hotel was constructed in 1889, the tender price reading 'just a little over ten thousand pounds'.

Since construction in 1889 'The Cri' has been a family operation, originally the Parker-Curtis families, The Smith family 1922 to 1982, Balkin, Gill, Tourish and from 1991 the Turnbull family. The Turnbull family are proud to have been owners since 1991 and are continually seeking new avenues to ensure the longevity of this Australian Icon. Four generations of the Turnbull family currently reside at 'The Cri'.

Looking for a feed after 20:00 in Rockhampton- good luck with that, however, this pub takes orders to I believe 21:00 on weeknights. That is usually after the time that most others are  as I experienced also literally asking you to pay the bill and push you out of the doors.nSo, bonus 1, bonus 2, the pub food was quite OK, the beer selection was-conservative tho'.nBonus 3, nice quaint place with competent staff.nSo yes, recommend this place.

We really enjoyed ourselves for dinner at this restaurant.  We came early at 5:30pm and there were plenty of tables but it quickly got busy. Ribs were nice and soft, steak was unfortunately dry. Everything else was cooked well. The kids nuggets and chips was at the right temperature, not piping hot which was appreciated. We ordered via the QR app and got charged the public holidays surcharge.  We spoke with staff and got this reimbursed.nnUnfortunately i didnt enjoy my service while ordering my drinks at the bar. The two young people serving drinks really need to left their game with service. No smile, no greeting, no thanks.

The pub is cool looking and was not too busy so we went for beers and dinner.  Beers were cold and delicious. But I ordered a steak -medium it was cold and very well done, it was hard and very leathery, potato bake also cold but tasted nice and veges they were decent. Clearly my meal sat under the heat lamp for ages cause it took forever to arrive even though there was about 6 people in the restaurant. My wife got the salmon and she said it was hot and liked it.  I really regret not asking for another meal. I won’t be back because the meal left me feeling ripped off and disappointed.

We stayed here from Christmas Eve through to 28 January. Stayed in room 21. The room was clean and exactly what we pain for. Bed wasn’t too comfy but we didn’t have an issue. The building is lovely and charming.nnThe food main meals were absolutely amazing we thoroughly enjoyed them - ate there two nights. Only negative was the sticky date we got on the last night were both dry - still tasted ok and we still enjoyed them though. Drinks and food were reasonably priced. Great atmosphere and fantastic staff

Can't rate the rooms as we weren't staying. The decor of this place has to be seen to be believed......fantastically done! The 3 of us travellers each had an amazing lunch. We were driving from Port Douglas to Ballarat Victoria recently and that was the best TBone I ate on the whole trip. Highly recommended.
