Story

The Criterion Hotel is an iconic symbol in the history of Hotels in Australia. Its famous cousin the 'Breaky Creek' Brisbane was built in the same year 1889 with very similar architecture, the Criterion having one extra floor. Following the Canoona gold rush of the 1850's the embryo of the Criterion Hotel, Palmers store was situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River opposite the present Criterion.

1856 saw the construction of the Bush Inn 'where The Criterion now stands' by Robert Parker of Gayndah. The eldest daughter of Parker, Dorinda Anne married George Silus Curtis a promising real estate agent, auctioneer and aspiring politician. Dorinda Anne was inspired to erect a 'public house of splendor and class' and after several journeys overseas The Criterion Hotel was constructed in 1889, the tender price reading 'just a little over ten thousand pounds'.

Since construction in 1889 'The Cri' has been a family operation, originally the Parker-Curtis families, The Smith family 1922 to 1982, Balkin, Gill, Tourish and from 1991 the Turnbull family. The Turnbull family are proud to have been owners since 1991 and are continually seeking new avenues to ensure the longevity of this Australian Icon. Four generations of the Turnbull family currently reside at 'The Cri'.

Was in Rocky for a total of three weeks, we were here almost every other night. Probably some of the best steak in Rocky. Definitely give their cri-fries a try. The service is pretty much self service, you order at the kitchen window and they deliver it to your table, they are almost always packed on the weekends, so make sure you get here early. The locals here are super nice and inviting, had many a good conversation about geopolitics standing in line waiting to order. We saw Japanese, Chinese, Thai and obviously we are American. I never felt like any of us was treated differently. In fact the bar staff asked a few of us to translate a bit of Japanese to help their customers. The atmosphere here was amazing too, they always had good music going and several nights they had live music going, the one acoustic musician was top notch and was taking requests. The staff was even kind enough to recommend other events going on in town that they thought we might enjoy. We were staying only two blocks over and our hotel had a restaurant attached but this place by far blew that chain away. If I'm ever back in Rocky I'll definitely be stopping here.

Beautiful historic Hotel. One of the oldest buildings in Rockhampton.
Great pub for a beer. Great food, entertainment Thursdays to Sundays. Wednesday nights they have a very popular Trivia Night.
Best hotel in Rocky.
Accommodation is great, inexpensive, clean, historic.

I have been enjoying the meals at the Criterion in Rocky for the last 30 years  - however on Friday we had to wait over a hour for a lunch meal. I assume that with being the Friday before Christmas the staff were stretched with dinners walking in.

A wonderful spot withe a beautiful history.  Will be coming back for more.

Went for lunch are the Criterion hotel. Meals were delivered quickly, and were good value for money. The interior is reminiscent of an old Aussie pub, with plenty of seating inside. Would recommend their lunch and dinner menu.

Arrived at a quiet time, food took a little while but when it arrived it tasted amazing. Staff very helpful when we asked silly questions about the menu and was served with a smile. Would definitely go back
