Sushi raft is a somewhat run of the mill sushi joint in a tourist area. The fish wasn't bad, but the cuts weren't premium by any means. The food tasted average and the prices were average as well. The waitress was soft spoken and it felt unclear whether she was interested in serving us at times. We had the salmon sashimi, tuna nigiri, lobster salad, vegetable salad, and tuna salad. As stated, unimpressive but edible. Not my first choice for sushi but the choices are limited in the area.
This was OK, but not great.nThe restaurant design doesn't lend itself to great ambience with a service / preparation area in the middle of the room and customer tables on either side. Some dishes were good but others were not. I had tuna sashimi which I didn't enjoy and tekkamaki which I did. My lunch partners had a bento box and spicy chicken rice bowl which they generally enjoyed.nWe each had green tea which consisted of a tea bag in a cup of hot water -- somewhat disappointing.nIn the bento box the feedback on the gyoza was not great. Other parts of it were rated well.nWe saw the service staff putting dumplings from a packet in the steamer for consumption later in the service day. I can buy something similar in Woolies or Coles, so this is not something I'd expect from a restaurant.nSummary -- the place was OK but could have been better. I want to give a 3½ star rating but I can't do that so I lean to 3 stars not 4.nnAn afterthought. The sushi train wasn't operating May 2023. The reason may be changes post-COVID or maybe it just wasn't operating on a weekday lunch time. That makes no difference to me but thought I'd mention it.
I have been coming to Sushi Raft for a little while & always enjoy the food I get. The service form the lady at the front is always excellent. I visited this week to get take away for lunch like I often do & unfortunately I won’t be returning. I saw the lady making my food & someone else’s sneeze not once, but twice without moving her head, without covering her face & continuing on like nothing had ever happened. She had definitely sneezed all over the food right in front of her. I took my food home & it went straight in the bin. After witnessing this, I’m afraid I won’t return as this lack of hygiene or care is awful.
Whenever ordering takeout, all the food is properly made and packed FRESH! They are always kind and don’t take too long either, definitely good for a go to comfort food place
Sushi raft is an ok sushi restaurant by Australian standards. I came for lunch on Saturday. The prices are ok $3.90 for most plates and not $3.50 a plate mentioned in a review a year ago and I enjoyed eating the items I ordered. The sushi train was not running. Fresh tuna was on the menu but none was in stock when I visited lots of tinned tuna which isn't really proper sushi at all. I had to ask twice for tap water but the single waitress was run off her feet. There is no screen or app to send orders. If I lived in the local area, I probably would return as there probably aren't many better options nearby. If you want a better sushi experience in Cairns for a similar price, I would recommend North Cairns Sushi Train instead.
