Hello, after spending 2 weeks in this "hostel" I absolutely do not recommend, suspicious place where you pay in cash. The owner Johnson is not a bad person, unfortunately the accommodations he offers are disgusting, completely DIRTY, we arrived in the "bedroom" the floor was sticky, beer cans... The place is full of people smoking bang at 5 am, playing music until 11 p.m. Many of our food, beers have "disappeared" from our fridge as well. Short to flee

Im Lionel , my wife and i are currently staying here at the Suncoast back Packers while we are searching for a family home , we have always find Johnson a very polite and honest Manager and will always make everyone feel welcome , the location here is awesome and close to shops and beech with a short walk and other residence are respectfull of each other Walkability: Close to all shops and beech
Disgusting place full of drugos. Told Johnson I was going to be there 10am on Tuesday he turned his phone off and went out fishing didn't return till 9 pm at night I payed him $30 for the night and left the next day.Rooms: 1/5
1 star is a complement. I never cared about fancy places and in my younger days I slept well in many places many people would call an "adventure". But this hostel is a completely trash. It is literally all trashed, and dirty and smelly. After see the conditions, I didn't check in and preferred spend a night in my car then spend any time there. Safety and hygiene there is a high gamble. Which is a shame. Location is good, but the owner couldn't care less.

I have lived in this working hostel for a bit more than 8 months this year. I was needing to do my 88 days and I have done them both picking and packing and I could also work in plants nursery. During the Coronavirus this place was the one that I called home. Once you get over the fact that the building needs a lot of investment you'll be able to appreciate the people who are from all over the world and are diamonds in the dirt. Afterall it is all a matter of perspective which you are the only one to be responsible for. So make it the best you can. There is a lot to say about this place so here is my sum up: Positive aspects of this place: - it is a working hostel so people you will meet will most probably become your friends because we all tend to stay here longer than expected. Everybody is welcome with their own quirks and skills. It is a family of backpackers. - people stay because you do get jobs. Not always hourly paid but Johnson does its best to get you working. You just have to ask. - if Johnson cannot find you directly a job there are plenty of them around the area and you will be able to use one of the car from Johnson to get to it. - this working hostel is more a sharehouse than a hostel. Meaning you have a lot of freedom which you would not have in other managed hostel. Meaning also that people are expected to want to take care of the place themselves. Freedom comes with responsability. - extra positive aspect is the location of the hostel. It is 5 minutes away walking from the beach where surfers can enjoy good waves almost everyday. ALDI and others shops are also 5 minutes away. Negatives aspects of this place: - it is an old building that definitely needs repairs in bedrooms and especially bathrooms which either the manager nor the landowner are willing to spend money on. - once you arrive you will be asked to get your own bed sheets. - since no one is paid to clean the bedrooms and outdoor spaces, backpackers have to do it themselves but it does get dirty sometimes and it can stay like it for a time when no one take responsability. - price of the rooms which are bit expensive for the services. Overall I had a great experience in this hostel thanks to the people I met and the parties which were thrown. I could save money and do my days for my second year visa. Don't be scared by the reviews just don't expect the same as in any other hostels. For the worst and the best. Cheers.
Very nice and fun hostel! Full of good people who are very warm and welcoming. Most people who stayed here chose to stay here long term or come back after some time because they like it so much here. I stay here for 2 months now and plan to add a couple of months to that. The manager is very relaxed and easy going, we are allowed to alter the hostel repaint the rooms, build a barbeque booth, renovate the tv room, etc... as long as its an improvement. We got a couple of builders who are always building something new for the big party on the weekend. The manager does provide jobs, sometimes good jobs, sometimes bad jobs. From hourly paid nurseries and pineapples to piece rate strawberries Really depends on the week but all of them count for the visa days. Luckily there are plenty of gumtree jobs around so with a fair bit of effort you can find a job in the area. Everybody in the hostel is working so in the week its usually quiet after 9-10pm but theres always something going on in the weekend and if the weather is right its going te be big! There's also a lot of skaters and surfers in the hostel so if you are into that this is the perfect location to learn All in all, this is a wonderful place to stay, really one of my favourite places in Australia. Can only recommend it with a well deserved 5/5
words can't describe how dirty this place is. but numbers can : 5 months without ANY and I mean any cleaning in the rooms, according to a guy who has been living there for the same amount of time. I arrived at the hostel around 5 PM, receptionist was already drunk and kept burping loudly as he was drinking all evening. the smell in the shared room was horrible URINE SMELL. I literally gagged a little when I entered the roomand I am not a faint hearted man, I've worked in cattle farms. trash everywhere. dirty floors. no pillows. just a single cover on the mattress, which hadn't been washed for months. at least, the people are nice. expect a lot of Asians, especially Japanese and Chinese. very friendly. but don't get fooled, I'd rather sleep outside than spending another night at Suncoast Backpacker Lodge. not even for free.
