The State Library Victoria is much more than just a library. It's one of Melbourne's most beautiful and iconic buildings. The architecture is stunning, and every room has its own unique charm, making it a wonderful place to explore.nnThe highlight of our visit was the magnificent La Trobe Reading Room. Standing beneath its beautiful dome and seeing the circular arrangement of desks was truly breathtaking. It's easy to understand why it's one of Melbourne's most photographed interiors.nnThere are also fascinating exhibitions, historical collections, and quiet spaces where you can sit, read, or simply admire the surroundings. Best of all, entry is free, making it a fantastic attraction for visitors.nnWhether you love books, history, architecture, or photography, the State Library Victoria is a must visit. It's a peaceful and inspiring place that should be on every Melbourne itinerary.
State Library Victoria is definitely worth a visit when in Melbourne. The building is beautiful, and the La Trobe Reading Room is even more impressive in person with its stunning dome and peaceful atmosphere. It's a nice place to escape the crowds, and entry is free.
State Library Victoria is an impressive space designed for real use—people actually come here to study and work, not just visit.nnThe interior is wide, open, and very well-organized. High ceilings and large reading areas create a sense of space that feels both quiet and focused.nnIt’s not just visually appealing—it’s functional. A place where you can sit for hours, stay productive, and enjoy a calm, structured environment.
Its a bit surprising to me that inside the building i could not feel that it is from the 1854 !nStill, it is a great place to see !nI was also surprised that the main reading/learning area was open to public so anyone can enter and take photos I guess quite disturbing for students.nAnd, funny things, nearly nobody was reading any book - laptops everywhere .
The La Trobe Reading Room was pretty and really conducive to study or work. Love the green lamps. A pity that the dome gallery was closed during my visit. Don’t miss the children’s quarters on level 1 if you have young children where you will find a 2-storey castle and play space. There is also a Lego model of the library with interesting trivia outside the children’s quarters
