RMIT Swanston Library

Story

The Spiritual Centre of RMIT is a building located at the City campus of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). The centre provides space for worship to all staff and students of RMIT, regardless of their faith and without showing favour to any one faith, and houses the RMIT Chaplaincy service.HistoryThe building was built in 1860 as the chapel of the Old Melbourne Gaol. It was part of the "North Wing" of the gaol, and today is one of the few remaining buildings of the complex. It became part of RMIT after the gaol's decommissioning in 1929. The other remaining buildings include: the main entrance gates, the female hospital, a service wing and a bathhouse (collectively known today, along with the chapel, as "RMIT Building 11"), and the "East Block" (currently utilised as a museum). The "West Block" of the gaol was demolished to make way for an RMIT expansion, circa 1910, and the large circular panopticon watchtower and male exercise yard were demolished in 1927 for the construction of the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy (now also part of RMIT).The centre is registered as a "notable building" by the Melbourne City Council, the Victorian Heritage Register and the National Trust of Australia.

FIVE STARS FOR THE STAFF ATTITUDE TO STUDENTS This city campus library has been around for a very long time and has morphed into a student learning support service. Not only can librarians guide you to the best literature and journals for your studies but they are also quite skilled at helping you to design your search strategy, decide which sources are high quality, how to cite your references and how to format your bibliography / reference list.

One of my favorite place in Melbourne . Friendly facilities for visitors. Environment is very clean and tidy. But sometimes feel too cold because of AC. •instruction • Please throw away your pet or gabarage into a bin!! Some cruel guys always left their rubbish . Don’t do that . Here is not your messy room .

Gets pretty crowded yet the silence of the place and smell of books and services provided are fabulous.

I have rated the library 4/5 as most staff are helpful and the facilities are good. But as at the date of writing (22 April 2016), almost half of the computers have an A4 sheet pinned to them which reads: "This problem has been reported". Well, so much for that! The closing procedure on Saturday evenings is deplorable: I don't want to single out a particular library officer or security officer but suffice to say these officers are very poor ambassadors of RMIT. (As an example, you don't ridicule an international student asking to use a rubber band by saying: "Do we look like a stationary store" then turning away, laughing about it to your colleague and then joining her in the twiddling of thumbs -- it was embarrassing to be part of the Australian educational system.) Contrast that to the closing procedure on Wednesday (midnight): both staff and security displayed good customer service. Basically, the good here outweighs the bad.

It's a great library, comfortable to study, crowded sometimes but quiet. Morden and clean, loved it
