I have visited the State Archives Reading Room on a few occassions to do family history research. The archivists are very knowledgable and helpful and if time allows are happy to get involved in your sleuthing. Before visiting consult the 'Plan your visit' section of the website to make the most of your time. They provide a pleasant room with tea/coffee/lockers but if you plan on spending the day there you should bring your lunch.nBecome familiar with using the catalogue. Some documents are available digitally from home, some are available on microfilm in the reading room, most are held in storage and need to be retrieved for you. They can be requested using the catalogue so they are ready when you arrive, or if time allows, requests can be made on the day. If the catalogue is hard to interpret just call the Reading Room and staff will be happy to help.
Lots of people come here when they're researching their family history. The reading room is very popular. There's off-street parking here. Buses from Mount Druitt and Penrith train stations stop outside this facility. The staff at the NSW State Archives are very helpful. There is no cafe or kiosk here, but there is a kitchen located on level 1 which the public can use. Bags are not allowed inside the Reading Room - you can leave the bags in the room on level 1 - the NSW State Archives supplies lockers that take a $2 coin as a deposit.
The State Archives host a vast trove of records dating back to the First Fleet. I visited multiple times earlier this year and the staff were consistently friendly and knowledgeable. Free tea in the kitchen for visitors too. Overall, a great place to visit for history nerds, researchers and avid readers alike.
What you would expect from an archive - shelves full of microfiche and books, original records available by request in the reading room. An invaluable resource for historical research, the reading room has free access to microfiche scanners and high quality cameras to copy documents. Staff are incredibly helpful and happy to devote extensive efforts to help.
Staff are very helpful and I found some very interesting information
