Mission

NSW Fair Trading safeguards the rights of all consumers and advises business and traders on fair and ethical practice. We provide services directly to individuals and businesses to create a fair, safe and equitable marketplace.

The laws we administer set the rules for fairness in the countless daily transactions between consumers and traders. We investigate unfair practices and ensure that the products sold in NSW are safe and meet their regulations and safety standards. We register co-operatives and associations, and issue occupational licenses for the building, motor vehicle and property industries so consumers can trust the people they are dealing with.

I suppose the majority of people only write reviews when they have something negative to say. But I've used the Fair Trading complaints process a few times and found it to be very worthwhile. Often businesses will volunteer to do the right thing when they find out they are being investigated and it doesn't even matter what the outcome of the investigation is. Good job guys. It's a valuable service for the public.

A toothless tiger that is the most useless organisation we have. Contacting them is the biggest waste of time there is. All they do is contact the person who ripped you off and ask them nicely to give you your money back. THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Complete waste of your time. If you think these people are paid taxpayers money to protect you as a consumer - you will be proven otherwise. They don't care about you. They will waste your time by requesting a dozen of documents and then advise you to go to tribunal. After dealing with this useless money-sucking department, I have little faith in consumer protection. Until the government realises this, we will have to deal with unskilled dishonest traders and service providers and be at their mercy.

I understand people can hate their job, so I try to be as easy as possible. But seriously... I want to know what is going on, everyone tells me a different story on what needs to be done. And everyone I called sounded very annoyed as soon as the line gone through, I dont expect you to smile or anything, but at least dont make me feel that you dont want to talk to me. First they tell me to wait 6 weeks for a letter to come, I did and called to check on status. They tell me to just be patient, I said it has been 6 weeks just want to see how it is. They said they dont know, just wait for another week or two and call back. waited another 3 weeks and called, they said they dont send physical letter anymore, just register online and do it yourself. I did that, followed all instruction, waited 2 weeks, no reply or any indication. Called again, they sounded very annoyed when they pick up the phone and they say like... Well, what do you want? and passed me to another department, and the line just cuts off....

I have made multiple ( more than 10 times ) phone calls on number 133220 yesterday and today for inquire over frequent overcharges by Optus before lodging a formal complain. No real person answer and answer machine seems to be something wrong as after requesting two options to chose from, then it didn't go ahead and no response at all, waster lots of my time and money ...
