Somerset Cottage

Story

Somerset Cottage Restaurant first opened in 1986, and continues to be run by Rick Lowe in the kitchen and myself, Anne Butcher out front, along with a team of special people who’ve been here with us for a while.

The restaurant is open for lunches Wednesday to Friday, from midday onwards and dinner every night except Sundays, from 6pm.

In addition we run cookschools from our restaurant kitchen, together with the occasional more epic excursion, further afield.

And we also have Somerset@Home – an online shop from our website (www.somersetcottage.co.nz) for a whole variety of product - stuff that we consider to be necessities in our culinary lives.

Yes a very nice place to have dinner, great food and wine list. Very relaxing and good service. Love going there always, have never been let down. Food cooked just perfect.

Am from out of town so maybe I’m not comparing apples with oranges but for a place that is supposed to be one of the best in the Bay I found Somerset Cottage decidedly average. This place wouldn’t last a month in Wellington or Auckland charging those prices for not much more than pub food. Uninspired and limited menu, so-so wine list, completely ignored our cooking requests for the eye fillet (since when does ‘bleu’ translate to medium...). The service however was friendly and prompt although we were not even asked whether we had enjoyed our meal - hence posting this review.

Been here a few times, the food is always lovely. We had the pork buns to start, along with prawns from the weekly menu. We followed that up with the duck and steak from the staples, which were both delicious and well cooked.
