Soi 38

About

Soi 38 is Melbourne's only dedicated Thai noodle soup shop. We sell only Boat Noodle soup and Tom Yum Noodle soup. Come visit us at 38 McIlwraith Place.

Story

Soi 38 is synonymous with street food in Bangkok as it is one of the most famous and most popular locations where some of the best street food can be found. Soi means side-street in Thai and rather than naming all the side streets off a major road they are simply numbered, hence Soi 38. At night Soi 38 literally transforms into an open air food court crowded with stalls, tables and customers while at the same time the street is still open to cars who use it as a kind of drive through as they order take away through their car windows.

would recomend using the QR code to order. Adds much needed photos to the menu.nnNice restaurant, dishes were lovely, very very spicy but full of taste. You won't find you're normal pad thai here but will definitely enjoy whatever you order.nnserving sizes were pretty small, prices were cheaper so does mean you can order more variety. but expect to need ~3 dishes per two people.nnGot charged a 10% weekend surcharge, there was no notice of this at all, only on the receipt after i paid. If they had of displayed this on entry, at the till, or clearly on the menu that would have been appreciated.nnWaiters were all super grumpy and did not come over to explain how the menu works. When i went to order, staff snatched the order sheet without a word and then gestured for me to sit down.nnThere was also a very loud humming from the ducting over head which was a little distracting. But the constant Taylor swift music masked it a little.nnall my complaints are easily corrected, would happily come back as the dishes were great
one of my favourite thai restaurants in the city. me and my friends always get the ultimate bowl, crying tiger, and deep fried pork belly, never ever disappoints. i also tried the tum plara kung sod papaya salad with fermented fish sauce and raw prawns which i genuinely really enjoyed. restaurant service is super quick too and the atmosphere makes me feel like im back home in southeast asia. 10/10 recommend!! i recommend try to come in early so you won't have to queue too long!
It truly felt like being in Thailand. The atmosphere was very authentic, and overall, the food was delicious. The longan juice tasted exactly the same as the one I had in Thailand and was really refreshing. The mango juice, however, tasted more like orange juice than mango. I really wanted to try the boat noodles, but they are only available during lunchtime, so I will definitely come back again at lunch to try them next time. Overall, it was a great experience and I would happily visit again.
Most of the food was delicious. The service was quick, and the restaurant was large. I just don't understand why the queues were so long, even though there were plenty of empty seats inside. It would be perfect if the queue issue could be improved.
I saw this place all over TikTok, so I was curious to try it. The concept is unique — the tables and décor mimic a street-food setup, but you get to enjoy it indoors in a warm, cozy space. I arrived around 7 PM on a weekday, and the restaurant was full. We waited about 5–10 minutes for a table.nnOur group of four ordered four dishes, total bill AUD 123:n- Crying Tiger: Perfect meat-to-fat ratio, very tender, and the dipping sauce was delicious.n- Thai Hotpot: Includes 3–4 types of meat, prawns, squid, and a mixed veggie tray. The broth is bone-based, clean and warming — great for cold weather. Not spicy or sour, so it’s easy for anyone to enjoy.n- Kung Chae Nahm Pla: Raw prawns with bitter melon, garlic, chili, and Thai sauce. Fresh prawns, but overall the flavor was just okay.n- Ultimate Bowl: Their most viral dish, but unfortunately the most disappointing for me. The instant-noodle smell overpowered everything, the tomyum broth barely covered the ingredients, and the seasoning felt incomplete. Toppings included prawns, baby octopus, scallops, roast pork, and three egg yolks: but the scallops tasted fishy.nnOverall, it’s a decent spot; but I’d recommend choosing meat dishes over seafood. The staff were quick and polite, which is definitely a plus.
