Lovely, possibly the owner, made sure we were well looked after. They have a great selectron of Italian cuisine. Really nice gluten free options. I had a pizza and would recommend it for those wanting a gluten free option.prices range from around $9-30 for mains. It's a huge restaurant...very odd for this side of Newtown, so not sure how they'll go, as it's not something many business would ever consider doing. They have a lovely wood fired oven and the decor is clean, spacious and simplistic. Great for large groups of friends.Felt very welcomed and although a large place, the owner, if he was, made us feel part of a family!:
We turned up at the restaurant they could not find our reservation They had made it for the following week . So they offered us a table in the rear corner which was in a walkway we declined but accepted a table in the rear passageway. We brought a very very expensive bottle of French wine with us which had a wax seal . The barman had great difficulty in breaking the wax seal. He finally did so then blew the wax off the head of the bottle with his own breath and then stuck his finger down the bottle to remove any additional wax. We were situated in a passageway where patrons proceeded to the toilet and out the back to smoke. The staff also went out to smoke banging a large door each time they did.this was very annoying. The food very unimaginative the chicken pate entree was runny the duck entree was good the steaks were cooked as ordered but the spinach was laced with garlic ,The fruits of the sea pasta dish was disappointing with not much seafood in the pasta and heaps of tomato. We shared the sorbets which were okay. It cost over $70 each Far too expensive for the quality and service which we received. Linda's up the road is much better value for money. We would not go back there again nor would we recommend this restaurant to our friends.
This place is an absolute Gem in Newtown! Warm, delicious, rustic, wholesome, down to earth food for the soul. I cant stop talking about the duck tortellini with sage butter and matched Pinot Noir, a match made in heaven, the roast beef main was tender and melted off the fork and the chocolate pudding was warm, moist, chocolate goodness. All the class of fine dining with a down to earth approach to European cuisine and a price tag of sixty bucks for three courses! Simply the best place we have dined in my 35 years of living in Sydney.
We found this restaurant to be exceptional. We found it by accident & 3 of us walked in off the street on Easter Sunday. I had the special which was the seafoid ravioli and not only was it handmade but it was delicious. The waitress was on her own but tended to all tables not neglecting anyone - a real superwoman.
I'm not sure where this place is pitching itself- it's a little all over the shop. Pluses: -good and sometimes great food - duck tortellini and beef are delicious -price is very reasonable -service, once it got going, was friendly and polite- although it initially took time for us to get menus, and we had to serve our first glasses of wine ourselves. Negatives: -music choice is important for ambience. When we were there, we could hear Guns and Roses playing out of these tinny little speakers. Seemed like a weird choice. Later it changed to something more appropriate to a sophisticated dining setting- but those speakers are very average. -I can't be sure, but I don't think the menu has changed in ages. The food was great, but a bit or variation would be welcome.
A well put together menu, there's little wonder why this restaurant has such a good reputation. I recommend booking as the venue is small and quite often full. Modern European fare such as rabbit tortellini is paired with a lush wine menu.
this WAS a very good restaurant once, but not now. This restaurant used to be packed and very busy but arriving on a Friday night, it was now half empty and with less tables - we should have realised it had changed hands. We started to take our coats off and not even seated when the waitress came over and shoved menus in our hands and asking if we wanted water. Another bad sign! We ordered a mixed fitto plate entree which was mostly stale and looking at the menu, they were mostly leftovers redone from the mains eg fried gnocchi. The entree took forever to come, we had eaten all our bread by the time it arrived so had no bread for the oversalted, over smoke dip, one of the menu items on the mixed plate. The mains we okay, not much flavour in the meat or poultry so unsatisfying. The worst part was that the bad entree made us feel so bloated and yet completely unsatisfied. And one of my pet hates is waiter/waitress who interrupt while we are talking and worst, taking empty plates & glasses while everyone is still eating. Its just rude and not good waitressing. Restaurants are NOT macDonalds, learn to serve properly. then to top it off, the waitress brought over the card machine and before handing it to me asked if I wanted to leave a tip. How rude! I ended up putting a tip on the machine as she was standing over me but I didnt want to as the food and service was not good. This was worse than pub grub.
Went to Soffritto with a voucher for a 5 course degustation. We had prawn with lobster bisque, porcini gnocchi with truffle cream sauce, involtini of chicken with pancetta and parmesan, veal ragu with polenta and a fruit crumble for dessert. Food was quite good, but nearly everything was under seasoned. Value was excellent. Service was attentive and prompt. The restaurant had a nice ambience, but the tables were very crowded and it was extremely hot and stuffy, making it very very uncomfortable and I was dying to get outside by the end of the meal.
Steak was ordinary, ordered a side of beans for $6 and it was just blanched a little salt, could have buttered it to add a little flavour. Pappardelle was okay but the red wine was very strong, and the pork was tasteless.
We've taken our friends and family to this restaurant twice now and both times have been thoroughly enjoyed - even with an inquisitive and fussy toddler. Service was attentive though advised to book ahead as previous posters have mentioned - it's small and can get crowded! Will definitely re-visit again!
