Royal Darwin Hospital

Story

Royal Darwin Hospital is a 345-bed teaching hospital located at the northern suburb district of Tiwi, Darwin, Northern Territory.HistoryThe first hospital of the settlement of Palmerston (later Darwin) was built in 1874. The hospital was built on Packard Street overlooking Doctors Gully under the authority of Dr James Millner. By 1878, the hospital was improved with stone. During the next 40 years, the hospital was administered by South Australia. In 1911, the Commonwealth Government assumed control. Construction of an 89-bed hospital fronting Lambell Terrace commenced in 1941 to cater for the Darwin area population of 4,000. The new hospital opened 2 February 1942 and was bombed just 17 days later during the Bombing of Darwin.Prior to Cyclone Tracy in 1974, approval had been given for the construction, based on the Woden Hospital design, of Casuarina Hospital on Rocklands Drive in the northern suburb of Tiwi. Casuarina Hospital became fully operational on 20 May 1980. On 1 January 1982, the Casuarina Hospital name was changed to Darwin Hospital. Following the Royal Assent on 10 January 1984, the hospital became Royal Darwin Hospital.

These stars are only for Ema & Christian the registered nurses in ED department. Absolutely loved their service. Have been extremely helpful & kind to my dad who was admitted for the first time in the hospital. Took immense care & made sure the regular checks were done on him. Thank you Ema & Christian for your assistance. Love your work guys.
The hospital is too small for the amount of emergencies.nThe nurses and doctors are under the pump and so are the patients.nMore beds would be appreciated and the Federal Government needs to assist big time.nDarwin a great place to live.nIt needs federal funding asap and more parking is needed. Ive read some of the reviews below. For me, i have nothing but praise for this hospital and their staff. I came in via Ambulance to Emergency and yes, i waited in a line to be seen. This is a very busy hospital!!. The staff and the ambulance guys were very attentive and mades sure i was as comfortable as can be. I ended up needing surgery and had to wait in the emergency ward for a plastic surgeon to be available. Yes, it was busy, yes there was constant noise, and yes there was a shortage of beds. I did not feel at any time that i was left unattended. Claire and the ambulance guys took care of me until i was admitted. Jonah with his bright technicolour pants and hair was a brilliant caring doctor on that night in Emergency along with nurses, Angelie and Rosni both so busy but still there when needed made a night in Emergency bearable. My young plastic surgeon lady called in to fix the damage, Collette, is a magician because next day, she did emergency surgery on me that means no further work is needed so far. Almost four weeks later her work is amazingly seamless, it looks great. The recovery nurse Emma kept watch over me until my breathing and BP returned to normal. Every member of the staff of Darwin Hospital has gone over and above the “just a job” outlook and this includes how well they deal with difficult patients when needed.nThe patience and diplomacy i saw more than once displayed by all staff, is truly admirable. I cannot thank them all enough.
A National Disgrace ! Could cause Harm !nHeads should Roll given the chaos that this place is in!nThe most deplorable experience I have had in a public hospital ever, and I have been to to the John Hunter!nA friend unfortunately happened to require emergency assistance whilst I was admitted and his comments were “this place is dangerous.” I would have to agree.nThe frontline staff are doing all they can and are brilliant in the face of the challenges and frustration ls they face, but senior leadership and organisation is sadly letting them all down.nThe bureaucracy soaks up all the money removes the efficiency therefore creating the risks and hazards to patients and frontline staff!nThe NT and Australian's deserve so much better for our tax dollar.nGod help us all !
Northern Territory Government......SHAME ON YOU......Doctors & nurses doing their best, got to Darwin Hospital at 10.30pm 11th May and STILL here waiting in Emergency at 4.30am for a suspected broken wrist, x-ray 2 hours ago and still nothing. We thought our Launceston General Hospital was in crisis but you've taken lack of timely medical care to a whole nother level....hang your heads! and yes I know what I'm talking about, I'm a registered nurse.....
