No doubt that this is a beautiful hike. However, it can be done easily in one day. It took me 3h and 15min (no backpack) from the car park to the summit and I found it less difficult than Isthmus track. So, if you are not convinced about staying in a hut and carrying lot of weight you have that option.

Simply amazing. I found the track itself quite easy as a lot of the walk was very well maintained or board-walked, though there was a good variation in the walking terrain. The views along the track are simply amazing and the huts I stayed in were also very clean and well maintained. I went just after peak season and the wardens had left the huts a few days before. The walk was quite busy, even in low season but everyone was very friendly and there was a good social vibe in the huts. This track connects to the Greenstone and Caples tracks which I also did on the same hike!

This 32km hike is considered along with Milford Sound and Kepler among top 3 in New Zealand and it is absolutely justified. You can run it in a day, but a much more immersive experience would be to hike it so that you can appreciate the splendour of the views and changing landscapes the trail allows you to discover. It is commonly recommended as a 3 days/2 nights hike, however if you are somewhat an experienced hiker/backpacker you may enjoy a slightly faster pace 2 days/1 night, staying over at Mackenzie lake hut or camping site, which is the nicest hut (and view) on the trail with all necessary amenities.

My goal was to make it to Harris Saddle and come back in one day but winter is here and right after Routeburn Falls Hut, the path was covered in ice and since you can't really walk on the side of the track, that was really dangerous. Even with my trekking poles I had to stop there and go back. It was a beautiful day though, cold but no clouds. If you do try to challenge it, you'll probably need more than 2h from this Hut to Harris Saddle, be really careful!
