Despite being in our fifties we felt right at home. The staff were lovely and we had everything we needed for our stay to be enjoyable. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathrooms clean and tidy. The Ritz is very handy to the trams and there is a lovely coffee shop just below. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Decent location, beach isn't far and you could walk to downtown if you wanted to. some pretty good restaurants are near. You'll want to go to them because the kitchen is poor. The room I was in was okay, it opens directly to the smoking pit, so the room smelt of tobacco constantly. There are lots of bathrooms which is uncommon for hostels. Staff is very friendly.

Two people allocated for one bed. I stayed in this hostel 1 night and here how it was: I came from a beach at 11:30pm into my room (10 beds) and found somebody's belongings on my bed with my stuff taken off the bed. I came to reception and reported that. Receptionist was very nice, double-checked "my" bed availability, took off belongings of unknown person from the bed and assured myself that I could sleep on it. As I understood there was no another bed to offer. That solution suited me up till 4am when 3 unhappy Englishmen came and started explaining that bed was occupied by one of them and I should vacate it and find another place. No receptionist was present at that time. No pleasure to argue at 4am with 3 unhappy Englishmen about right to sleep at the bed. I should note that they were utterly polite and correct (thanks them for that). Another Englishman waked up from our discussion and offered his own bed to me while himself went to sleep to the bed of his friend who this night was absent. (Thanks him for that) I was lucky!:) Conclusion: bad management affected sleeping of at least 3 people. At the morning I told this story at reception and was given verbal apologies. No refund for this night was offered. Such a bad experience deserves 1 star. Pancakes for the breakfast were very good though! (+0.5 star) Have a good stay and be prepared to improve your conflict resolution skills at around 4am. ;)

The guys at the Ritz were very accommodating. Free brekkie in the mornings - pancakes and spreads everyday, who would complain! Any queries you had they were there to help. If they had no room, they would offer to help you find elsewhere to stay. Really nice bunch and in such a good location. I would highly recommend!! May be staying there in future when we backpack next year!! Peace.

I have stayed in a lot of hostels in Australia now and this is by far the worst. While I haven’t stayed in all and some maybe be worse this has a very good chance of taking the crown. Somethings can’t be helped such as a small common area, they have done there best and can’t be blamed too much even though it is an unfriendly/unwelcoming set up. But the customer service from one particular receptionist was truly awful. She walked away while I was speaking to her on two separate occasions. MID CONVERSATION. I could not believe how rude she was and have never had such a bad experience from customer service in my life. Another receptionist went outside for a cigerette for almost 30mins whilst I (and others) waited for some assistance. Really poor and very disappointing that simple things can’t be down right.
