It starts with a ferry ride with beautiful views and refreshments. You can easily spend the whole here as there are lots of indoor and outdoor art to enjoy. The food is great indoors and outdoor spaces to sit and eat / drink nThe art is controversial, dark and innovative, remarkable on the other hand.nThe gift shop is extortionately priced.nThe staff is a bit rude and not very helpful it was a put off
One of the best designed gallery spaces I’ve ever been to, but containing most of the worst ‘art’ Ive ever seen. The building is spectacular with 3 floors of underground displays with random rooms, corridors and spaces mostly dimly lit with sounds playing throughout. A bit of a sensory overload at times if you are a sensitive person. Good facilities with cafe, toilets etc. Two car parks near the entrance and a bigger overflow car park a short walk away. Only 20min drive from central Hobart or there is a ferry option. We went in November and booked a 10am slot in advance, but didnt need to. No queue to buy on the day. Probably worth booking from Dec in the tourist season though. We spent 1 hour there. That was enough for us. It’s a ‘must go to’ on the tourist list. Be prepared to go for the experience and be underwhelmed by the artwork. subjective I know
The building was spectacular, the art so so.nFerry ride over and back was fun but I felt I was being held prisoner in the building waiting for the next ferry, which did not run frequently enough. When we were finally allowed to go to the wharf there was nowhere to sit, all ages and abilities were made to stand and wait for the infrequent ferry.
Highlights include the provocative installations and the engaging storytelling throughout the exhibits. The museum's café offers delicious food with beautiful views of the river, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring.nnI highly recommend taking the ferry to get there; the scenic ride adds to the overall experience. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just looking for a unique outing, MONA is a must-visit!
Mona in Hobart is truly an experience. The boat journey to get there sets the tone for an exciting day. The art on display is fascinating and thought-provoking, with pieces that challenge conventional ideas. The architecture is absolutely mind-boggling, and as you walk around, you can’t help but marvel at the vision behind creating such a space and sharing it with the world.nnThe on-site cafes and restaurants offer a good selection of wines, perfect for unwinding after the immersive exploration. The food was nice, though, as expected, on the pricier side. It’s definitely a destination to tick off a list.
