Students aren't supervised, staff don't seem concerned that their primary students leave school property through drain tunnels, come onto private property to torment my dog and throw rocks and sticks at my house and the houses surrounding us. It seems that students are never in class as they are always the same kids at mine and neighbours fences trying to get over or damage property. The responsibility falls on the staff, however the students are given the freedom to do what they like, which is likely that this will ultimately transpire through their adult life. Disgraceful staff and I am honestly unsure how academically that school operates given there doesn't seem to be any learning with staff happening. If you need a babysitter for school hours, this school is your best bet for children to have complete freedom and control regardless of safety issues to do what they please, but if you are wanting your child to have an education I would suggest sending them elsewhere
Do not send your kids to this school! If they have a learning difference diagnosed they will be discriminated against! Their professional diagnosis will be ignored. The teachers make up their own mind about what they think the problem is instead. The teachers are not held accountable for their actions by anyone and any formal complaints are ignored. Make no mistake this is a business, looking to make money.period. Your child’s needs will be secondary to that. They should be shut down.
Beautiful school, great music and art program. They understand the value of introducing music to students at the right age to maximise learning potential of the creative process. Would recommend to any parent looking to bring their child up in a safe and creative environment with a balanced education.
My time at MRSS is a time I can look back on with such joyous memories and great experiences which I could really never have gained anywhere else. I joined MRSS in Kinder garden and continued on to finish VCE with high marks. Finishing at the school on the final day of year 12 was such a sad day for me and I really miss my time there. The school community, teachers and grounds create such a nurturing atmosphere for young people. I truely believe that schools like this are becoming less and less these days as technology advances. The way of teaching here allows you to grow as a person without external pressure that other schools may have. The Outdoor Education is fantastic, I learnt some very important life skills and truely developed my connection to nature and the world. The VCE program was great, with an ample selection of subjects. I found the support of my teachers during this time to be very helpful and allowed me to get through my exams quite easily. One of the most beautiful things about the school is that it really does function as a community. Our teachers became like friends by the time we were done, which made it even harder to leave. I'm a creative person, and i know that I would not be so artistic and openminded without the experiences gained through the Steiner education.
It is hard to find a place to start in describing how wonderful a school it was and is in my experience! I spent the entirety of my schooling at MRSS from 4 years of age until 18. The strength of friendship and community developed throughout has stayed strong into my mid 20's and continues to grow. I was able to academically excel during VCE and subsequent university Science studies, which I attribute greatly to my willingness to ask the questions "why" and "how" - regardless of the status or how dogmatic who or what I was questions was - which was a quality inherently fostered by my schooling. I am lucky enough to still spend time coaching at the school, and seeing the children playing happily and looking at the world around them with wonder and inquisition whilst being nurtured as individuals is so heart-warming to me, and makes reflecting upon my childhood even fonder. I truly hope people will go and experience the school environment, philosophy and community for themselves before drawing a conclusion about their thoughts of the school and whether it is suited to them.
The school helped shape who I am today, my experiences there led me to be a happy and knowledgable human being of the world. The school camps gave me an understanding and appreciation of science, nature and physical activities, and the extensive music program led me to become a fully independent working musician. The VCE program was great and fully covered any course I may have wanted to apply for after school and the sense of community and wholesomeness at MRSS makes every student feel welcome and safe. Loved it!
I live in one of the unit directly behind the school, with a single fence between myself and the upper playground. On a daily basis we have unsupervised children swinging off our fence, throwing stones, yelling profanities, and at one stage had them jump the fence and rummage around our yard. Never a teacher to be seen! Either laziness or incompetence. Maybe both? Good luck sending your children here.
As a past student of this school I can say without a doubt that it is the best thing that ever happened to me. Not only are the people there, and everyone I have met as part of the community wonderful, generous, giving people, but the curriculum and support from the staff as well as from other students allows you to thrive as a person and I cannot wait to be able to send my daughter there.
I'm a former student and a management consultant these days, so I understand the pressure schools are under to keep everyone happy, but there are two fundamental things most parents care about, bullying and drug use. In both these areas Melbourne Rudolf Steiner School failed. Culture's in schools don't change quickly, so you can assume this review applies to present day. The culture is dog eat dog, so your child will either be a bully or be victimised with no middle ground, there is minimal surveillance across the spacious grounds and physical fights occurred regularly. If it happens, your child will receive no support from the school itself. I was there under around 12 years ago, and panhandling by teachers was still considered acceptable back then, which shocks me now, but that has likely changed. Drug use was also a major issue at this facility. Most schools, even 12 years ago, had a zero tolerance attitude to drug dealing on school property, and would send any student that was drug or alcohol affected home. This never happened at MRSS and drug deals would occur around the oval from outside, non student dealers i.e. professional dealers. It was quite clear that students were drug affected with slurred speech, perspiration and dilated eyeballs, but this not an operational priority at MRSS. Even in a Music Festival, you'd make an attempt to enforce borders against non-students, but this never happened at MRSS - it was considered part of student life. The curriculum and educational aspect was acceptable, but in hindsight, from a personal security perspective, my time at MRSS felt more like a light security correctional centre because of the risk of confrontation with drug affected students who were volatile and the overall lack of personal security. I don't regret my time at MRSS, but I regret the fact that my parents didn't have a true picture of what they were buying, and neither did I until too late. The positive reviews should be tempered through this lens of truth.
Gorgeous school, wonderful environment, an oasis of childhood in a world that sometimes forget to let children have one.
