Story

Melbourne High School (MHS) is the only selective State School in Victoria for boys only in Years 9–12. The School continues to maintain its standing as one of the finest schools in Australia and develops the finest thinkers and leaders in Australia.

Melbourne High School traces its history back to 1854 and the establishment of the National Model School. In 1905, the School became the Continuation School and therefore proclaimed itself as the first state secondary school in Victoria. It is a statewide provider of broad academic education for boys in Years 9 to 12. The School has 1365 students, with approximately 340 students in each of four-year levels - year 9, year 10, year 11 and year 12. Admission to the School is by competitive examination with a small discretionary factor. A supplementary intake also takes place in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students are drawn from a very wide cultural and socio-economic background and come largely from the greater metropolitan area of Melbourne and inner country locations. It is this ongoing dynamic cultural mix that has remained a cornerstone of the School's success.

The School is in central Melbourne, in the City of Stonnington, and within the Southern Metropolitan Region of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).

The School is located close to the Melbourne Central Business District and is impressively situated on a hill overlooking the leafy and attractive district of South Yarra. The School is adjacent to the Yarra River and on the corner of Chapel Street and Alexandra Avenue. It is well serviced by rail, tram and bus transport as well as bicycle paths and major roadways. Its location and the appearance of the spectacular "Castle On The Hill", have given the School a mystique that has added significantly to its ethos and its standing within the community.

Great school, equips students very well to be independent learners for life. I loved all the extracurricular activities and the focus on academic work. If you attended you know how good it is. If you’re a parent and your child is an ambitious learner it’s thoroughly worthwhile
This school is pretty good. Most of the teachers are really nice, but some of them are plain rude. There have been a few major incidents in just this year alone, including multiple sexualized comments, however, the teachers blamed it on other issues and tried to hide it, just to preserve their reputation. Also the zest is not zesting.
School has great facilities many extracurricular activities and has a very structured curriculum delving beyond the Victorian curriculum's minimum standards offering a very well rounded education, however, many of the teachers but not all have a clear lack of respect towards their students, with some of them lacking the basic ettiquette to acknowledge a student's message/email, even after the student follows up with them do understand that teacher's do get busy which is fine however it happens on a consistent basis with a handful of them. Nevertheless, this school is without a doubt the best government school in the state and you would not regret sending your child here.
I am writing as a concerned member of the school community to bring to your attention a troubling incident that took place during the recent Muck-Up Day at Melbourne High School, South Yarra. The incident was overseen by Mr. Paul Drew, the Senior School Assistant Principal, and I believe his actions were extremely unjust and inappropriate, causing undue stress and harm to a number of students.nnDuring this event, certain incidents occurred that were not caused by all students. However, rather than identifying those responsible, a blanket punishment was enforced, targeting even those not involved. Innocent students were forced to attend school during their crucial SWOTVAC period, a time meant for focused study and exam preparation. They were informed that failure to attend would result in serious consequences, including the potential denial of the opportunity to sit for their upcoming exams.nnWhile at school, these students were subjected to harsh and unreasonable treatment. They were made to sit in silence for two and a half hours, were not permitted to study, eat, or speak, and were only allowed two minutes to use the bathroom. This punitive approach treated the students as though they were criminals, without any opportunity to respond or prove their innocence.nnMr. Drew's handling of the situation has caused significant distress to many students, impairing their ability to focus on their studies during this critical time. It is deeply concerning that students were placed under such extreme stress, and many now feel uncomfortable raising their concerns with staff due to fear of further repercussions. Unfortunately, this sense of unease seems to be a recurring issue in interactions with Mr. Drew.nnWhile Principal Anthony Mordini has consistently demonstrated fairness and empathy toward students, this particular matter does not appear to fall directly under his purview, and community members have found it difficult to address their concerns with him due to his busy schedule.nnI strongly urge the Department of Education to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate disciplinary action regarding Mr. Paul Drew’s conduct. Furthermore, I request that special consideration be given to the affected students, as their ability to study and focus has been compromised. The stress and fear instilled by Mr. Drew’s actions have had a profound impact, and it is essential that this matter be addressed to prevent further harm.nnThank you for your attention to this serious issue. I look forward to your response.nnSincerely,nA concerned community member.
Before I joined this school, I thought that it was a dream come true if I attended. The legacy was second to none, the academic statistics were off the charts and reputation was phenomenal. Here's a perspective they don't show you though: the majority of students are self taught, the depression and mental health is far too high, resulting in two friends jumping on train tracks, and about half the teachers are apathetic to the students' conditions. If you go to this school, expect two things: having to self-teach oneself more because teachers would go at an absurdly fast pace mainly VCE and the opportunity to do anything. There are tons of opportunities because of the legacy and reputation, but a lot of the acclaimed positives are smoke and mirrors.
