A very interesting place with creeks, dunes, and lakes and forests. Great for families to spend a summer day here. You can hike, climb the creek, swim, sandboard and so on. But the parking lot here is small, it is better to go early in the morning.
Quite an intriguing landscape just a short walk from the car park. You can walk along the stream or over the dunes to Lake Wainamu, the sand is fairly compact and not too difficult to walk on. There is a circular walk around the lake at some point you'll need to cross the stream and remove boots unless you take the anticlockwise route as far as the waterfall about an hour's stroll and return the way you came.
An amazing day out, beautiful scenery, well worth the walk. Was a bit merky after all the rain, but still had a great swim
Awesome spot for a summers day. Water can be dark but has always been fine for a swim in my experience. The sand gets dangerously hot so walk along the stream or take shoes with high socks to walk over the sand dunes.
This is my second time here. This time round there were barriers up that says Private property on the dune. But no one seems to take the heed. People just climb the dune over to the lake. It was scorching hot and there's no shelter or shades. There's a longdrop toilet as you descent the dune towards the lake. We weren't prepared but made it to the lake, sat there for 1 minute and decided to leave as it was really hot. Parking was a problem as it was full. Maybe another time, when we are more prepared. Until next time...

A moderate landscape - sand dunes are of some interest, not as vast as other sand dunes in NZ such as the Cape or Pauto Point dunes in Dargaville. In Auckland, I guess this one may be the best.
This walk is amazing but the dunes are closed off for some reason so you can no longer walk over them " private property signs which never used to be there.
Nice walk to the lake, but very busy
