La Spaghettata

About

Characterised by its charming history that spans over 38 years, La Spaghettata offers customers a classic Italian dining experience.

Story

In 1950, Tony and Giovanna Cattafi stepped off of a boat from Sicily, Italy onto the shores of Australia, never dreaming that one day, they would own the first pasta house in the country. They didn’t dare dream that they would begin a legacy that would continue on for generations, and that the people of Melbourne would embrace their authentic Italian cooking and warm family hospitality.
But that’s exactly what happened.

And 30 years later, La Spaghettata is still recreating the atmosphere of the Cattafi’s family heritage by combining a cozy family environment with traditional dishes like bruschetta, pescatora and spaghetti marinara. You won’t find pre-made pasta in the house—every dish is made from scratch. In fact, La Spaghettata is the first restaurant in the area to make fresh pasta on the premises.

But the sensory experience doesn’t end with great food. When you walk into La Spaghettata, it’s as if you’re coming home. Loyal diners have been coming to the restaurant for decades, and are greeted with hugs, kisses and familiarity as they pull up a chair in the authentic rustic farmhouse building. People of all walks of life come for the delicious food and friendly atmosphere, including Valentino Rossi, Kenny Rogers, Catriona Rowntree and Andrea Bocelli.

The Cattafis had a vision, and that desire to feed and cater to Australia’s people has continued on throughout the generations. La Spaghettata is one of the last family owned restaurant in the area, and that’s reflected by the dozens of family members who continue to prepare and serve the traditionally made dishes that the Cottafi family enjoyed in their homeland.

La Spaghettata isn’t just another Italian restaurant—it’s an authentic Italian experience, complete with traditional ingredients and recipes that go back for generations, and a host family whose sole purpose is to feed you well, make you feel comfortable and special and invite you to become one of the family.
See you in Melbourne…Italy.

Not a bad place if you are after the genuine Italian taste of spaghetti and pizza. The staff is very polite and the food was great. So many different options of food and drinks. Parking is an issue as it’s just on the lygon street so during rush hours you need to find parking on adjacent streets. Overall a must visit place and very close to the cbd.
A true Italian experience. Though very busy, our order was taken & delivered quickly. The food was tasty & good portions. The cassata was a great choice of dessert & the tiramisu was rich and creamy. Definitely the best affagato I have ever had. I would be happy to support this family run business again.Food: 4/5
Quite possibly the best Italian restaurant in Melbourne. The food, especially the seafood, was super fresh and cooked to perfection. The seafood marinara was delicious in a very generous portion. The tiramisu and espresso were the bee’s knees. The ambience just took me back to Italy. The service from Luciano was warm and friendly. Highly recommend and will definitely go back
THE BEST ITALIAN IVE EVER HAD! Beautiful family location! delicious gf pasta and all meals were fabulous ! Tasty and beautiful drinks! So friendly the staff inviting us into the restaurant and fantastic service ! Best place ever ! Chilli oil and Parmesan on service also . Fantastic!
Prompt service. Friendly staff. Delicious Spaghettata oysters. I ordered a specific Red but the owner decided he knew a better one and supplied that instead. Have no idea what it was other than YUM! Great coffee. Decent prices. Romantic atmosphere.
La Spaghettata had on their menu a large variety of pasta as well as Italian/Modern/Australian mains. We tried quite a few of their pastas, garlic prawns, meatballs, and caprese salad. My only favourite was the fresh and cheesy caprese salad, and the rest were average; the pastas lacked flavours and portions were small. The venue itself was nice with its heavy italian-themed decorations, and service was prompt.
Was looking for 'genuine' italian restaurant on Lygon. Thought to try this one because of the large number of patrons. Service was good and personable but food was below par and largely disappointing. Servings were sizeable but over salty. The veal parmigiana was dry and tough. I wouldn't return nor recommend.
7 of us dined here for dinner on a Monday night. 5 adults 2 x pre teens. Pretty quiet and not much atmosphere, probably due to being a Monday night. Service was pleasant and smiling. Ordered after about 15 minutes, entrees and mains. My entree arrived and 1 minute later my main arrived. Please give us some time to enjoy the entree before the mains arrive. This was the same for all of our meals. The food was pretty good. Hot and tasty and Marinara Fettuccine had heaps of fresh seafood. Mussels, pippis and prawns. We had a couple of issues with the ordering of our desserts. I believe there may have been a bit of a language barrier that caused the problems. One of our guests asked for a dessert that had 'Baileys' in it, but it came out with berries in it instead. The waiter was pleasant about it but refused to take it back. So we had to order another dessert the one he originally wanted. Pretty poor service, when we spent almost $500 on our dinner here. I also asked for gelato, but received Neapolitan ice cream see photos. I didn't even bother complaining about it. At least we had great company, so we enjoyed that aspect of our dinner. Not sure l would go back, considering the issues.
A last minute option after walking with elderly mother. Very overpriced especially the entree menu. For example, one standard slice of bread cut in quarters topped with herbs, a tomato slice and oil dressing $15. I thought 4 pieces of sourdough or alike would have been more dazzling considering the fearce competition on the street. 2 x arachini balls $19 was a better option but not knocking the tastebuds out of the park. A side of plain veggies $12 was also a bit rich for the offering recieved. The mains were better with good flavour and size. However, I will not return here preferably trying some other more authentic Italian we couldn't get into.
Best Italian meal I’ve ever had! Staff were charming/ welcoming, flavors were fantastic and the Gluten free pasta was phenomenal! Will be back! Fantastic staff!
