Kotaraya is a Malaysian, Chinese and Thai restaurant in Elsternwick. The night we visited was very busy, but understaffed as we had to wait a long to for our orders to be taken. When the food arrived, some of it was not up to scratch. The roast duck was overcooked, the honey chicken over fried and the steamed rice was stale. However, our barramundi with Thai sauce was flavoursome and light. Good beer selection.
The best Malaysian style chicken rice in Melbourne but only available on Sunday and not on public holiday.
Food: A fantastic range of Asian food. Their biggest advantage here is the choice of dishes and cuisines. Food was well cooked, and well flavoured. I loved how this dishes had lots of colour too them. They looked really appealing and portion sizes were generous. Atmosphere/Service: Kotaraya is a fairly large restaurant, and offers a good number of tables for larger groups. It always seems to be busy in the evenings, and has a pleasant atmosphere. Service is a little hit and miss, they really need to work on their organisation with this and ensure they are approaching tables in the order they arrived, but staff are nice. Would I recommend it: Yes, I was surprised given the variety of food available how well cooked and well presented it was. I also thought it was very affordable for the portion sizes given. I'd recommend booking if you plan to go in the evenings, particularly at weekends.
My Grandmother's 85th last weekend was held here. Apart from being particularly noisy on the night, this is a very good, long established Asian eatery. With a great blend of Chinese, Malaysian, and Thai; there is something for everyone who enjoys Asian Cuisine. Service is prompt. Waiters are polite and attentive. Located on Glenhuntly Rd, it is easy to get to, but if driving, give yourself a little extra time for parking to avoid frustration.
Excellent food with a good range of choices on the menu, fast service and takeaway is quick to come out. Often busy and I would advise booking ahead for mid to large size groups.
I thought the food was great and I thought the service was exceptional and had not received this level of service in a long time. The laksa looks great and the spicy chicken ribs were delicious ! Nice local eatery !
